The premise of Beka Lamb is based on Beka's achievement of winning the essay contest. Her family's thoughts of her changes overnight as she went from a 'flat-rate Belize creole' to a 'high mind'. Beka lives in a stable middle class family with both her mother and father present as influential factors, also there is the presence of her grandmother who keeps her in touch with the older customs so she is both grounded in the new and old and will be able to create her future with a mixture of both. Beka's family helps each other to survive and grow. beka through the support of her mother was able to stop her habit of lying. through the support of her father and the death of her best friend (who was like a sister) was able to strive and get an education and work on finding her position in society
In the novel, Beka Lamb, Granny Ivy and Beka get along well, and even share a room together. Beka has a tense relationship with her parents, and Granny Ivy usually takes Beka's side, and is able to console her.

In the 18th chapter, Sister Mary Virgil shares news to Miss Eila and the rest of the family, saying that Toycie must be expelled because of her pregnancy. She excludes Emilio out of the equation and out of frustration Bill Lamb interjects but ends up with the same answer even though Emilio is as guilty as Toycie.
