Why did Black Friday start in the 1800s?

User Avatar
It didn't. The Black Friday of the 1800s was unrelated to the famous post-Thanksgiving shopping day. In 1869, The term Black Friday referred to the Wall Street collapse caused by two wealthy industrialists, Jim Fiske and Jay Gould, who attempted to corner the market on gold and ended up destroying or badly crippling nearly more than 200 Wall Street brokers. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Black Friday refers to the mega shopping day following Thanksgiving Day when retailers allegedly begin operating "in the black" (making a profit) for the year.

How and when did Cyber Monday start?

User Avatar
The when: 2005. The how: How do you think? Marketing. Ellen Davis, now the senior vice president of strategic initiatives at the National Retail Federation (NRF), coined the term in a November 2005 press release. Retailers had noticed a bump in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving in the years prior, the release said, and they’d capitalize on that by offering great deals in 2005. “We thought about calling it ‘Black Monday,’” she told the Los Angeles Times, “but that’s also the term for the big stock market crash, so we didn’t want to go there. We considered ‘Blue Monday’—because of the color of hyperlinks—but that had the connotation of being sad or depressed.” The NRF settled on the “cyber” prefix and later launched cybermonday.com to serve as a clearinghouse for deals offered by its associates on Cyber Monday. The term—and concept—has blown up in the years since, fueling what’s looking to be a historically successful Cyber Monday in 2019.

When did Black Friday start in the US?

User Avatar
The day after Thanksgiving has always been the traditional start to holiday shopping. Over the years retailers have offered discounts on that day to lure shoppers into their stores. The Black Friday as we know it today (long lines of people outside stores at 5am or even midnight) didn't gain popularity until the end of the 20th Century. It had been a long standing tradition to have big sales starting the day after Christmas. It was during the Carter years that retailers tried jump starting the holiday shopping season with super sales on the day after Thanksgiving due to a predicted slump in Christmas gift sales. The previous year the "Day After Christmas" sale had pulled many retailers out of red ink as cash strapped shoppers took in the bargains after a disappointing Christmas season. Double digit inflation and high unemployment after the Nixon/Ford years had put the nix on spending for luxury items like expensive gifts. These sales were intended to get would be shoppers motivated and into the stores and re-igniting the "Christmas gift giving spirit" The plan worked and became an American tradition known as Black Friday as shoppers lined up outside in the predawn darkness all across the country. The term "Black Friday" was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. "Black" refers to stores moving from the "red" to the "black," back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Ever since the start of the modern Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been known as the unofficial start to a bustling holiday shopping season.

What is or was Black Friday supposed to mean?

User Avatar
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Especially popular in the United States and Canada, the event is spreading to other nations such as Australia and the United Kingdom. On this day, many retailers open very early, often at 4 a.m., or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season. Because Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, the day after occurs between the 23rd and the 29th of November. The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term began by 1966 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday" indicates the period during which retailers are turning a profit, or "in the black."

This is currently not possible. And it is unlikely to ever be possible. The reason for this is because we cannot trust the majority of people to upload family-safe images. Allowing users to post images makes us vulnerable to spam attacks, pornographic trolls and inappropriate content. It takes far too much time and effort to moderate images. So it is not worth it on the business and moderation side of the website.

What time does Black Friday end and start?

User Avatar
Start: 4am End:It's all day Technically Black Friday Sales start as early as Monday, November 19, 2012. However, actually Black Friday (November 23rd this year) starts at 12:00 AM at select retailers in-stores and online. ~ To add: Here in MN Walmarts were open all day, AND at 8 pm rolled out their first section of sales. Then at mid-night another, and 6 am another set. Kmart has their start on Thursday, Thanksgiving, and then another set of good sales on Friday, and yet another on Saturday. So, it can be what ever the store and staff do.

Who is the world's dirtiest man?

User Avatar
In my opinion this distinction has to go to Bert: the chimney sweep from Mary Poppin stories. Answer: At the end of the American Civil War may hobos roamed the countryside. One was the Leather man. he never bathed and you could apparently smell him coming from a mile away as he never bathed or changed his leather outfit. Monks in the middle ages were also credited with a lack of hygiene. A truly "holy" monk could have an "odor of sanctity" that was noticeable a mile away.
