Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It can be calculated manually (see related questions) or by using a BMI calculator such as the ones in the related links section from the CDC. They have calculators for both adults and children/teens and can be used with English or Metric measurements.
BMI is used by medical professionals, nutritionists, and others to roughly measure the extent of obesity (or an underweight status) in individuals. It should be used as a guideline since it is not 100% accurate (for example, muscle weighs more than fat and you can get skewed results if you are a body builder with muscle mass but not fat).
What is the ideal body measurement for men?
There is no ideal measurement of a male body. But the ideal shape is said to be a Trapezoid like figure. However, for any height of a man, a smart shape is denoted as-
36" Chest
32" Waist
36" Hips
The concept of smartness may vary among various cultures and contexts.
Weighing 104 pounds at 5'5, that would give you a BMI of 17.3.
Starving yourself is never the answer to lose weight. Starving yourself could lead to serious consequences like becoming anorexic or bulimic, which cause a lot of harm to your internal organs and eventually, without getting help, even death. Just do the usual diet and exercise thing, eating the right food and the right portions helps a lot better than no food at all. Please re-consider the whole starving yourself thing, its not a good idea at all. You could seriously hurt your body. If you want faster results, talk to a doctor about losing weight. I don't know how much 9.5 stones is in pounds but if its a healthy weight, I say keep it. =]
The problem with anorexia is that by starving yourself you literally destroy the basic muscle structure of your body. Starving causes the body to turn to anything available as building blocks. Muscle and other tissue is broken down to use as energy since body fat does not provide for all of your nutritional needs. As a result you end up loosing critical muscle mass, such as heart, diaphragm and other critical tissue as your body attempts to provide for basic needs. The problem with anorexia is that after you've destroyed so much of your muscle mass, there is little left that actually burns calories. Remember that your muscles are responsible for using the overwhelming what you eat. After reducing your muscle mass all excess calories are turned back to fat so you'll gain weight far more quickly after an anorexic episode. Diet and exercise are still the best method of weight loss. You need too make sure your body has the basic nutrients necessary to make repairs and provide for your energy needs. Exercise helps you increase muscle mass, makes you look good, feel good and helps you avoid injury. Can they die from the condition, certainly. Look up Karen Carpenter. She battled her anorexia for a long time and eventually died from complications. It's a tragic condition because so many young women seem to think that they must be pathologically thin to be accepted. It's not a natural state but the entertainment media promotes the ultra-thin, drug or anorexia induced figure, indirectly teaching our young women to be self destructive. It will kill you. And for your information, the ultra thin woman doesn't look good just as the ultra overweight woman looks bad. There is a middle ground, where most of us live. Be strong, eat balanced meals and live a normal life. How do people die from anorexia? Wasting away is part of the picture. But a lot of anorexics die because their electrolytes or blood flow get messed up.
As a medical student working in an eating disorders clinic, I have two young patients who have each had two heart attacks from their potassium dropping too low. I have a couple patients whose kidneys failed. Almost every single one has osteoporosis (where your bones lose their density), and a lot of them have multiple stress fractures (breaks that usually only older women get). In fact, their risk of fractures is increased even 40 years after stopping anorexic behavior! One thing to remember is: anorexia is the most deadly psychiatric disease. Most people don't realize this. But your friends can help. Some of my patients who come in at 5'7" and 75 pounds think that they have no problems, but in reality, your friends and family can see your true state. Trust them. Finally, BMI isn't everything. An athlete can have a very low or very high BMI, depending on their lean muscle mass. But an anorexic or bulemic laxative abuser can have their colon permanently destroyed at a BMI of 21. So take care of yourself, and if people around you think you need help, you most likely do, even if you think you're okay.

If your 5'6 female 161 pounds and 18 are you considered overweight?
Yes you are. I'm in the Marine Corps and our Max weight is 155. For an average everyday girl anything above 155 is overweight. But you're still young, just watch what you eat, excercise, and it'll go away. I was 170 when I was 18, and I'm also 5'6. But when I joined the Marines I got the weight off fast. Good luck with everything.
