The pack has the final say.

The "Class A" uniform generally includes at least the uniform shirt and patches and neckerchief.

The hats are not strictly required by most packs but are usually worn.

The belt is also optional in most pack but is useful as it is designed to fit the belt loops that they earn.

The store bought neckerchief slides look nice and are convenient but anything can be used including crafts that they make for themselves, rope knots, or even a rubber band.

Matching blue slacks are worn for some of the more formal events but most packs allow substitution of slacks from other sources than the BSA.

There are several merit badge requirements and leadership requirements, but the hardest part of the award is the service project because you have to take the leadership role and organize it. If you work hard and remain dedicated then you should expect a lot of help from your parents and leaders, it shouldn't be too hard.

Girl Scouts wear uniforms to show that they are members of a national organization: Girl Scouts of the USA.

They also wear uniforms to show the awards they have received, the badges they have earned, and events they have participated in.

An Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow wears a Brotherhood sash without the two bars, leaving only the arrow at center.

According to the U. S. Scouting Service Project website Andy Griffiths was a scout but not an Eagle scout. They do not specify what rank he attained.

Captain Alan Douglas was the pseudonym of George Harvey Ralphson 1897-1940. Ralphson was one of the Boy Scouts first scoutmasters but started his literary career at an early age. His publishers used the Captain Alan Douglas pseudonym to lend credence to the series and author.

Mitigation in emergency management means the steps taken to prevent all possible hazards that may lead towards a disaster. The mitigation phase of emergency management is unique because it focuses on long-term tasks that are effective at reducing or eliminating any risk of a disaster from occurring. Mitigation is part of four phases of emergency management: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. After the recovery phase, mitigation may begin again as a part of the recovery process. The first step in mitigation is to identify risks. This is usually done by finding a potential hazard and then examining it to determine the chances of it causing a disaster and who is vulnerable to the disaster. For example, if there is a catastrophic earthquake, but it occurs in the middle of the desert where nobody lives, then there is no risk involved.

Some approximate date guidelines I've learned in online research:

The metal cased pocket watch style was made in the 1920's to mid-1930's. They were replaced with a design having an eight sided reddish-brown plastic (Bakelite) case. These are identified by the needle design.

From the later thirties through the forties, the needle was black with a twisted bar shape, and the North tip was white. Starting about 1950, the needle was red, with a very narrow oval shape and a white line lengthways on the North end. About 1957, the needle was changed to red with sharp pointed ends, and a "N" was cut out of the North half of the needle. This lasted until about 1963. The Bakelite Taylor price went from 75 cents to $1.85 over its roughly 25 year lifespan.

These metal and Bakelite cased Taylors were sold without the BSA markings as their "Leedawl" compass. The Bakelite "Leedawl" was black, rather than the reddish-brown color.

The last Taylor Boy Scout compass was first offered in 1963 for $2.00 and had a round clear plastic capsule. You could see through the capsule, which had map orienting lines etched into the bottom. This was surrounded by a black plastic ring with the degree markings on it. It kept the red cut-out "N' needle of the final Bakelite style. A similar design is now made by the Brunton compass company and called the "Trailbuster".

Taylor merged with a medical device company, and as best as I can determine, stopped making any sort of compass about 1974.

As an interesting side note, Taylor made many of the precise measuring instruments used in developing the first atomic bomb, and some components of the actual bombs that were used against Japan.

There are no merit badge requirements for First Class. However, there are various individual first aid skills among the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class requirements. First aid is an Eagle-required merit badge, though. See link for more info.

It is not really a badge (at least not one that is earned). It is the symbol of international scouting and is worn to express unity with scouts all over the world. It is part of the standard uniform of Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts and so worn by all of them. It is not part of the uniform for Sea Scouts or Girl Scouts.

The Weaver Popcorn Company (makers of Pop Weaver popcorn) started working with Packs and Troops in Buffalo Trace Indiana in 1979. The idea for councils to sell popcorn spread from there. The Weaver Popcorn Co. began selling their popcorn to the public in tins with the BSA logo until they were asked to stop by BSA national on the grounds that they did not officially sanction the product. Weaver responded by creating a brand that could be marketed exclusively by scouts, Trails End.

Definitely not, but the Church does encourage its young men to join BSA and incorporates scouting activities as part of its Young Men's program (for boys 12-18).
