What is trade-in value?

Trade in value is normally somewhere around wholesale value. It is the value of what the car would bring at a wholesale auction. Of course this value can be more than wholesale if the car is in excellent condition, or the dealer offers more. You are almost always better off selling the car to a private party, and not trading it in. Dealers almost always put as little money in the car you are trading as possible. They must get the car ready for sale and know up front they will have to spend money on detailing and any repairs that are necessary, especially if they are going to sell the car with a warranty. You can sell the car to a private party "As Is" with no warranty. Just make sure to get it in writing.

Depends on the state you are in. Pick up your phone book and call the state motor vehicle dept office in your town, or in some states the county clerk does it, or here in NH it's the town clerk. In GA, you don't pay sales tax if a private party; only dealer sales are subject to sales tax. Or maybe they closed that loophole by now.

Do you need a title to sell an old car?

Maybe. Contact your local DMV and ask. I am assuming of course that this is your car :) Many times a new title is printed when the new owners go to get the paperwork done for new license and registration, so it may not be in fact "needed".However if you have it and you sell the car it would be best to sign the back to indicate the car has been sold and is no longer yours. This way if there is an accident before new title is issued, you are not involved!

Also be aware that the age of a vehicle can affect whether or not you need a title to transfer ownership (including donating the vehicle). For example, in NH, vehicles older than 15 years do not require titles for ownership transfer. Check with your state's DMV to get more info.

How do you apply for a lost title?

Stop by any of the DMV location with registration, ID, and a bank statment (might not be needed) to show a proof of address, and pay a small fee and recive new title.
