A DVD ROM is a "Read only Memory*" it is the disk itself and as such it cannot burn anything. A DVD reader can only read DVDs. A DVD writer can write som recordable DVD formats.

The easiest way to do this is with a software called DVDShrink. (A Google search will readily reveal several download locations.) You will be able to cram as much video onto a DVD as you like, provided you're willing to sacrifice the quality of the video.

HDVD-9 is the closest and the most recent I've looked at. Probably your best choice. I got all 4 seasons of Teen Titans, all 50 eps of Yu-gi-oh, all 95 eps of Rurouni Kenshin on one DVD using that program. That's 42gbs right there. But there may have been a more updated version I have to look.

if the CD or DVD cannot be read, chances are the file system on the media is not supported. Try using it on a different OS such as Windows to see if the file system is recognized.
There may be structural damage on the media as well, which would prevent it from reading.

To the naked eye they are not really that different at all, they are both the same physically and they are manufactured in the same way. The real difference is the "Pits, Landings, and Optics (Dyes)" and the spacing between them. CD's have large spaces between the pits or grooves (where the information is stored, about like an old LP Record) where DVD's have much smaller spaces between them (look at a course thread bolt and a fine thread bolt to understand the differences - but much smaller of course). Dyes also play an important part as they affect the optical reflection of the laser, and contribute to the longevity of the media.

A CD-Rom is the general term for CDs
A CD-RW means Rewritable so you can go over burnt data multiple times
A CD -R means Writable so it can only be burned once
A DVD is a generalized terms for DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs, but generally most dvds are RW
And a CD-worm is Write Once Read Many which is Cd data that can never be erased once burnt so it doesn't get accidentally lost. People such as Governments agencies or large enterprises tend to use these.

You can't. One cannot "append" more information onto the unused portion after the burn process has been completed.
If you are using a CD-RW disk, you can re-write the data with the added music files.
What is initializing a DVD-rw?
What this means is that the device the disk was inserted in is setting up the format of the disk to match the operating system of the device so that it's compatible with the device's recording methods. When it's done recording it'll also most likely `finalize the disk' which is to say, close the files so that the disk is properly completed and the files can't be written over until you command the software to erase the disk for re-use.
