What was the opening statement by Charles Manson's attorney?

The trial officially began in mid-June of 1970. Judge Charles Older presided. He decided that the jury, once selected, would be locked up until the end of the trial - "to protect them from harassment and to prevent their being exposed to trial publicity." Older was given a bodyguard and his home was provided with protection.

The twelve jurors selected were five women and seven men with a range of ages spanning from 25 to 73. While many occupations were represented, one was a retired deputy sheriff.

In his opening statement, Bugliosi characterized Manson as "vagrant wanderer, a frustrated singer-guitarist...who would refer to himself as Jesus Christ...and was a killer who cleverly masqueraded behind the common image of a hippie that of being peace loving...but was a megalomaniac who coupled his insatiable thirst for power with an intense obsession for violent death."

Bugliosi stressed that Manson commanded his followers to commit the murders, but that "the evidence will show that they were very willing participants in these mass murders.

Because these crimes were so bizarre, Manson and his chums were so bizarre, they got worldwide attention. Not just the arrests but the trial that at the time was the longest trial in Califorinia history. What OJ Simpson (trial) was to the nineties, Manson was to the 1960s and 1970s. As sad as it is, Manson still retains a certain amount of celebrity. He actually gets 'fan' mail.

What religion is Charles Manson?

Charlie has never belonged to any organized religion that I know of. But of course if you think you are Jesus Christ you don't need a church. Manson takes scripture, twists and distorts it, and dispenses it freely to whomever happens to be standing near. It's a dangerous habit.

Why did Charles Manson believe he was JESUS?

Because he was a delusional sociopath.

I doubt that he did. At least not in his more lucid moments. But he did believe that to maintain his control over others he had to come up with something pretty good, a big story. The Jesus thing was pretty big. How could they refuse Jesus?

He didn't, and he wasn't a sociopath. Every psychologist who's ever spoken with him found him to be completely sane.

Who does Charles Manson compare to in serial killers?

There are very few serial killers who can compare to Charles Manson. He manipulated his followers into committing the murders instead of doing it himself, and so in this way he does not compare to other famous murderers. Other high profile killers are often driven by some sort of sexual perversion, for example necrophilia (Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer etc) or pedophilia (John Wayne Gacy etc etc) but Charles Manson was driven by a combination of his hate of authority - due to his traumatic institutionalized childhood and imprisonment as a young adult, the freedom and liberation of the 60s, LSD, a borderline personality disorder which resulted in self obsession and an ability to use and abuse trust of the people who liked him, his own belief system based on many religions and ways of life that he read about during his early prison life and an obsession with becoming famous - he had originally hoped it would be through his music but murderous infamy became good enough in the end!

A complex individual, like many other serial killers but perhaps his complexities deviated from those of a 'typical' serial murderer.

He has reached a level of international fame that only SOME high profile celebrities and Hollywood stars have reached. He has received more fanmail than any other prisoner in history and much more than most popular celebrities, no other serial killer has ever had this level of media attention or public interest.

Does the band Heart donate some of their proceeds to get Charles Manson out of jail?

In my research I could never find any evidence to verify that this is true. And I sincerely doubt it that any public figure would side with such a notorious killer. Bad publicity, you know.

How did Charles Manson react to his son's suicide?

I don't think he had a reaction. I heard him say in an interview that he couldn't care less about any children he may have fathered. As with all things, Manson is totally detatched unless it is about him.

What were the similarities of Charles Manson's victims?

The Tate-La Bianca murder victims were affluent people from expensive neighborhoods, with the exception of Steven Parent, who was shot by Tex Watson because he was in the wrong place at that particular time. He was visiting Steve Garrison, the Tate's groundkeeper.

Manson's other victims though did not fit this mold. Gary Hinman was a music teacher in a public school with little material wealth. John 'Shorty' Shea, was cut into tiny pieces which I believe have never been found. These men had the misfortune of crossing Manson's path but did not live to tell about it. It is suspected there are many more and police still search in some of Manson's old haunts in the hope of finding bodies or at least body parts.

Why was Linda Kasabian not brainwashed like the other family members?

She may not have been the only one, just the only one that went with the others on two nights of murder. When Charles Manson selected the people that carried out his orders of murder he picked the one's he knew would do as he wished, no questions asked. Kasabian was one of the more recent additions to Manson's 'family', knowing Manson for a much shorter time than some of the others.

Manson made a huge mistake when sending Kasabian along to the Tate-LaBianca residences. The only one that did not take part in the violence, she was, however, the only family member with a valid California driver's licence. She made an easily believable witness for the proscution.

Kasabian was the mother of a small daughter, which may have left her more 'grounded' and stable, not as easily influenced by others. It is probably true in at least a small way that she was not the type of person that was in the habit of losing control over her mind, drugs or no drugs, to outside influences.

Who found the Charles Manson crime scene?

Sharon Tate's housekeeper, Winifred Chapman, found the bodies the morning after the murders. On October 10, 1969, Chapman herself disappeared. She was eventually found but her message was that she wished to be left alone. I guess she needed a break from the police investigation and the press that was hounding her.

No. Manson has spent most of his life behind bars but not Alcatraz's bars. The prison closed down in 1963 and I believe Manson was in another state.

What movie set did the Manson family live on?

The Manson Gang had various hideouts, None were movie sets- though may have been background in Westerns, etc. one was a mining camp ( at one time) and the other was the so-called Spahn ranch used for cattle raising, at one time. neither was used for movie filming except possibly accidentally.

Manson and his family did live on a movie set, called Spahn's Movie Ranch. And it was a regular movie set. The owner Spahn was still alive and lived there also. Almost completely blind, in exchange for the family doing chores and the 'girls' taking care of him that got to stay for free.

How many cellmates has Charles Manson had... I am NOT believing the Bill Davis story that he was ever a cellmate of Charles Manson... any record of that anywhere?

Charles Manson is now in his mid-70's. His rap sheet began at the tender age of nine. It would be a massive undertaking to backtrack 60 years or more trying to find those records. Manson was arrested for the final time in 1969. So unless Bill Davis shared a cell with him prior to 1969-70 he could not have been Manson's roomy. Manson was sentenced to death. All death row inmates are kept isolated from others, even other condemed men. In the early 1970's the Supreme Court abolished the death penalty, all death sentences were reduced to life. But Manson has been kept in solitary confinement for his own protection. Prison officials have tried to prevent a similar tragedy like Jeffrey Dahmer who was killed by a fellow inmate, refusing solitary confinement for his safety.
