How much does it cost to fix a speedometer on a Chevy Avalanche?

I had trouble with both the speedo and tach. They run on a "system" that is prone to failure. The dealer charges are outrageous, so there is an aftermarket industry that has developed. I found a local (Ft. Lauderdale) shop to "repair the entire instrument pod for $325.00. I only had to remove/replace the pod myself (5 minutes!) You can find other companies on the Web. Info for removing pod: beauty bezel that goes around pod AND radio is removed simply by pulling. There are about six "male, plastic snaps" that release under prerssure. Once they are released, the tilt wheel needs to be in the down position and the gear shift lever all the way to the right. Be careful not to damage the flasher button when removing beauty bezel. Instrument pod is held in place by 4 sheet metal screws with hex heads. I believe that they are either 1/4" or 5/16". It is easier than it sounds

How do you replace a serpentine belt for a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder?

There is either a tensioner or an adjustment screw on a pulley. A Haynes manual or Chiltons manual will help with the routing of the belt, and how to adjust the belt tension as well. Usually the idler pulley is used, before loosening the top bolt , loosen the center bolt of the pulley.

How do you replace a Serpentine Belt on a 91 Caprice V8 57L 9C1?

To remove the serpentine belt use a 1/2" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner upward off the serpentine belt while removing the belt from the pulleys. When installing the new belt make sure the belt is aligned properly in the grooves of the accessory pulleys(or the costly new belt will be shredded when the engine starts). Install the serpentine belt under the tensioner pulley by rotating the tensioner upward with the 1/2" drive breaker bar. When the breaker bar is released the tensioner will keep the belt properly tensioned.

How do you change a dimmer switch in a 1984 caprice classic?

i hope this helps at least one person out there with a 84 caprice( a car i love more everyday because it's badass in every way from engine to interior),cuz i searched the internet as you probably have and found nothing on it about a dimmer switch,i couldn't even find anything about a dimmer switch in my haynes full-size caprice repair manual! a old friend of my dad who is a ex-mechanic showed me how to do this step by step,so here it goes :)

step 1: remove the a/c vent plate that's directly underneath the steering column,(i just unscrewed mine and set it behind my brake pedal out of the way).

step 2: remove the (2) nuts that hold the steering column with a bracket in place, you will need a #15 socket for this (remove and gently lower the column slowly because there's a small cable connected to the column's shaft with a clip that moves the gear indicater needle when you put you car into gear..reverse,park,ect..)

step 3: remove the (4) nuts that hold that bracket on the steering column, you will need a metric socket for this,(# 13 i think)

step 4: the dimmer switch sits about 8 inches behind the a/c vent plate( if you turn your hi-beams on and off you'll see a metal bar activating the switch) it's held in place by (2) small metric screws.remove those and unplug the harness from the switch.

assembly is pretty much the reverse of removal except for one thing.after you put on the new dimmer switch, bracket, and bolt the column in place..put your car in gear(your car could be on or off, doesn't matter),apply the brake and put in "drive" then adjust the indicator needle wire(mentioned in step 2) by pulling it until it's on "D",then clipping it into place on the plastic shaft. you have limited room on this part ( but i have big hands and had no problem),and DO NOT LOSE GRIP ON THE CLIP or it might pull out of reach.put on the a/c vent and......

THAT'S IT!

it only cost me $10 for the switch, well worth it when your headlights don't work or are stuck on hi-beams,LOL

i couldn't believe how easy it was when i did it....especially after completley dismantling the top of the steering column because i assumed it was in there,LOL

Good luck and i hope you find this useful, i sure as hell did :)

How do you replace dashboard lights in a 2002 Avalanche?

Sitting behind the steering wheel, remove the large "trim ring" that surrounds your instrument panel, radio, climate controls, etc. It is just held on with friction clips. Pulls right off. From here, get a metric nut driver or small 1/4" drive socket with an extension. The nut driver will be orange in color. From here, remove the four screws at all four corners surrounding the speedometer and gauge array. To remove, turn your key on but do not start the engine. Put your transmission in "L" or all the way to the bottom, as far as it can go, and tilt your steering wheel all the way down, as far as it will go. Then just remove the speedo and gauge array and gently unplug the two ribbon cables. Now, good luck finding dashboard lights! I tried to replace mine with LED's to get that "aircraft quality" type of crisp, white light, but can't locate them. I have done this a few times and it will take you less than 5 minutes to remove the speedo. From here, you have to be careful on how you open up the array to access the lights. Some are replaceable, some are not.

How do you replace serpentine belt on 1999 Mercury Sable?

Most cars and trucks today have what is called a serpentine belt which runs most accessories. They are very dependable and usually easy to replace. To decide if your belt needs replacing, simply look at the grooved side of the belt to see if it is cracking badly. A couple of cracks every 3 inches is normal, but if you see cracks every 1-2 inches I would recommend that you replace it. On most cars and trucks the procedure is basically the same. First off, get the correct belt by bringing your cars VIN number to the parts store(located on your cars dashboard) the parts store may need it. If there are two choices, get them both so you can complete the repair. Once you have the correct belt, take a minute to review how the belt runs across the pulleys and also check to see if your car/ truck has a underhood diagram of belt routing in case you need it. In most cases you will need a socket wrench or breaker bar with either a 3/8" and /or 1/2" head on it and possibly a short extension. Some models may require a wrench of these similar sizes. Now that you are ready to go to work, you will need to find the spring loaded tensioner which is generally located near the top of the belt path; it usually has a shinny pulley on it. Look at the tensioner and insert the tool into it and apply opposing pressure to release the belt. Now, simply install the new belt making sure it fits into the grooves on all the pulleys. Start the car to check it and you are done and you saved yourelf some money!
