The starter can be seen under the intake piping. Remove the pipe from the throttle body, and then you'll see the starter. You should be able to trace the negative battery cable to it. It has three bolts and can require much finesse to remove once unbolted.

You may have a loose or corroded ground connection. Not just the battery ground but the engine to chassis ground. You may also have a bad battery cable. If you see swelling on any part of the cable, replace it. Make sure the connections are clean and tight. Did you replace the starter solenoid with the starter, or is it a separate item? If the solenoid is separate from the starter, it is probably bad. It is unlikely that the ignition switch is bad, but possible.

i found the computer located on the drivers side up under the dash

According to Champion spark plug applications chart, the gap for 2000 Pontiac Grand Am 4cyl engine is .050.

USALLY it's because of a BAD heater control Valve-butt the hoses can get full of crud & block the flow-ALSO if the Thermostat sticks open the engine won't develope enough Heat.& make sure there is Vaccume going 2 the Heater Control Valve.

It is relay 18 in the Engine Compartment Fuse Block. Page 6-59 in the owners manual.

On the transmission's bell housing, passenger side.

I had the same thing happen to me and my 96' suburban. It turned out to be that the battery was shot and wouldn't hold enough of a charge to turn over the engine. Might be the same thing with you.

if your wiring from scratch the original vettes had a positive battery cable on the main bigger terminal on the starter solenoid. they woul also have fusable links that feed certain circuits power when ignition like lights horn auto locks brake lights. the s terminal is the signal from the ignition swich that would engage starter when key was turned all the way, the start wire from ignition switch is wired through a safety circuit, for manual transthe circuit is open until clutch pedal is depressed with auto trans its wired through the neutral safety switch. the reson for this is so when you try to start your car in gear it will not engage starter until clutch padel is depressed, with auto if car is left in any gear except park or neutral the starter will not engage. I have seen many people hurt running direct feed to starter. they turn the key and the carlurches instantly into whatever is in your way. do it right

Just below the intake manifold. Sorry to say, it is a bit of a pain....but if you jack it up and crawl underneath it is fairly easy to access. Your hands might have to go at some pretty weird angles so the higher you can get it (safely) the better off you are for movement.

the starter on a 96 cavy should be to the right of the exhaust manifold when looking down on the engine. the starter if you pop the hood and it is on the bottom side in the front where the engine and transmition bolt together

I'm not positive, but you might take a look at the threads protruding from the nut to see if it is reverse threaded. I know a lot of pinion gears have a reverse thread on them. This would mean you would turn your wrench clockwise to loosen the nut. If you can't see the thread, check with your parts supplier to see if it is a reverse thread.

look from the bottom on the back side of the engine you'll see it there. When you get under the car, it's in the middle of the engine/gearbox, above the exhaust, to left from the oil pan. it's easier to see if from the right side (passenger).

My guess is that it is on right top side of trammy, but not shure, kinda dark right now, if wrong i will repost when light=) it is below the engine and has three bolts. Be carefull though I had an 87 escort back in 1990 and when I had to change the starter the bolts would not turn, eventually the head snapped right off - had a similar problem with a probe. The starter has a strong twisting force and it probably really jams the bolts in after years.

You can swap relays within the relay center with another relay that matches, but in most cases it is seldom the relay at fault, it is probably a bad fuel pump.

It depends entirely on the condition of your engine. If the bearings are in good condition, use a lighter weight oil (lower numbers). If the bearings are getting a little worn, use a thicker weight oil (HIGHER numbers). Watch the oil pressure gauge. If, after the engine warms, the oil pressure starts to drop to near zero during idle, use a thicker oil. If the oil pressure stays up when the engine is warm and idling, you might be able to use a lighter grade oil. As related to the brand, use whatever has been running in the engine in the past, so long as it's a respected brand with the SAE certifications.

The neutral safety switch SHOULD be screwed into the side (normally drivers) of the transmission and will have 2 leads going from it.

The distributor handles several jobs. Its first job is to distribute the high voltage from the coil to the correct cylinder. This is done by the cap and rotor. The coil is connected to the rotor, which spins inside the cap. The rotor spins past a series of contacts, one contact per cylinder. As the tip of the rotor passes each contact, a high-voltage pulse comes from the coil. The pulse arcs across the small gap between the rotor and the contact (they don't actually touch) and then continues down the spark-plug wire to the spark plug on the appropriate cylinder. When you do a tune-up, one of the things you replace on your engine is the cap and rotor -- these eventually wear out because of the arcing. Also, the spark-plug wires eventually wear out and lose some of their electrical insulation. This can be the cause of some very mysterious engine problems.

The manual with really help... but it isn't that difficult. The starter is located underneath the engine about in the middle. It's best if you hoist up the car and use jack stands for safety. Remove battery ground (negative terminal) cable. There are two 13mm bolts that hold the starter motor to the engine. You may need to remove an oxygen sensor if it's in your way. Otherwise, remove starter cable (red) from the starter motor and then remove two bolts.

To install, repeat the following in reverse order. Torque specs on the starter motor bolts is 20-27 Nm (15-20 lb-ft), and starter motor cable 8-12.4 Nm (70-110 lb-in).

Find the horn and remove the wire going to the horn/s it should have a connector you can seemly slide off however if it dont you may have to clip the wire and tape the end so it doesn't short if it goes to ground. A horn in many states is required your best cure is to fix the problem and to leave the horn alone. , EzForJesus

Hello, low oil pressure can mean either you need to add oil,(which you should check to see if its low) or your engine can be on the virge of breaking, oil pump could be going out, the main bearings could be wore, several different things could be the cause, but if the oil is full, take your car to the shop and have it checked. I would reframe from running the engine no more than i had to until you can get it fixed.
