Can you give potassium iodide to children?

Iodine is an essential trace element for life. Iodine's main role in biology is as a constituent of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones act on gene transcription to regulate basal metabolic rate (the rate at which the body burns calories when at rest). Too little iodine causes a deficiency of thyroid hormones which reduces basal metabolic rate (maybe up to 50%), while in excessive production of thyroid hormones the basal metabolic rate can shoot up to something like double the normal rate.

The daily intake of iodine recommended by the United States Institute of Medicne is between 110 and 130 µg (micrograms) for infants up to 12 months, 90 µg for children up to eight years, 130 µg for children up to 13 years, 150 µg for adults, 220 µg for pregnant women and 290 µg for nursing mothers. The "Tolerable Upper Intake Level" (UL) for adults is 1,100 μg/day (1.1 mg/day).

Of course tincture of iodine is often used on kids asn an antiseptic for cuts, scrapes, etc. Some people develop a sensitivity to iodine. Application of tincture of iodine can cause a rash. Solutions with high elemental iodine concentration such as tincture of iodine and Lugol's solution are capable of causing tissue damage if use for cleaning and antisepsis is prolonged. Some cases of reaction to Povidone-iodine (Betadine) have been documented to be a chemical burn. Eating iodine-containing foods can cause hives in some people.

So, in general - yes - iodine is safe for kids, just don't overdo it and if a rash develops, see a doctor.

How much sleep should a 7 year old get?

Every child is different - some need more sleep and some less - but here are general guidelines for how many hours of sleep a child needs on average each day.

AgeNighttime sleepDaytime sleepAverage total sleep2 years10.5 to 12.5 hours1 to 3 hours (1 nap)11.5 to 15.5 hours3 years10.5 to 12.5 hours1 to 3 hours (1 nap)11 to 14 hours4 years10 to 12 hours0 to 2.5 hours (1 or no nap)10 to 13 hours5 years10 to 12 hours0 to 2.5 hours (1 or no nap)10 to 12.5 hours6 years10 to 11.5 hoursnone10 to 11.5 hours7 years9.5 to 11.5 hoursnone9.5 to 11.5 hours8 years9.5 to 11.5 hoursnone9.5 to 11.5 hours

* Note: The two sets of numbers don't always add up because children who take longer naps tend to sleep fewer hours at night, and vice versa.

Keep in mind that most kids need a lot of sleep - usually more than parents allow for. Often, says BabyCenter sleep expert Jodi Mindell, author of Sleeping Through the Night, if a child has poor sleep habits or refuses to nap or go to bed before 10 at night, his parents will assume that he just doesn't need much sleep. That's probably not the case - in fact, it's likely that such a child is actually sleep-deprived, hence his hyper, overtired behavior at bedtime. To see whether your child falls into this camp, ask yourself:

  • Does my child frequently fall asleep while riding in the car?
  • Do I have to wake him almost every morning?
  • Does he seem cranky, irritable, or overtired during the day?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, your child may be getting less sleep than his body craves. To change this pattern, you'll need to help him develop good sleep habits, and set an appropriate bedtime and then stick to it. A preschooler or young grade-schooler who's outgrown napping needs a solid 11 to 12 hours of sleep a night, and that amount will gradually decrease as he gets older. Even so, by the time he's a teenager, your child will still need nine to ten hours of shut-eye a night.

What could be the problem if your 3-month-old baby is screaming a lot and has soft green poop?

Go to a doctor straight away as this could be symptomatic of gastroenteritis, a major cause of death of babies. In the meantime give plenty of fluids -- the best would be something with electrolytes in it. Highly dilute lemon barley water for example. Nothing concentrated. Make sure the water is boiled and sterilize rattles, dummies, etc., by boiling or placing in sterilization mix (rinse well with extra boiled water).

If you got pregnant on May 31st when is your baby due?

January 31st 2011? Your conception date would be roughly May 9th, give or take a few days. However, it's difficult to accurately say when your conception date was. I suggest speaking to your doctor, midwife or obstetrician to get a better idea.

He / She should still get formula or breast milk. Baby food in jars or cooked vegies or fruit that has been smashed. Graham crackers without the honey or regular saltines. No Whole milk yet. Nothing with peanuts in case they have allergies. Just try different baby food to see what they like.

I would add to the above list cereals such as porridge or weetabix but be cautious that many commercial breakfast cereals contain too much sugar and salt.
