The rear (breech) should swing to the right. The extractor should pull the cartridge out of the chamber partially- pull it out with your fingers.

As a result, the value of low serial number Rock Island 1903s is very low- wall hanger status. I would urge you to have your rifle inspected by a competent riflesmith with strong knowledge of 1903s.
