PCV, stands for positive crankcase ventilation. Since the piston rings cannot stop every bit of combustion gases from escaping past them into the crankcase(oil pan) area, there needs to be some way to safely vent that pressure, so that it wont build up and blow the seals out of the engine. The PCV valve does this, by applying a controlled amount of vacuum to give the combustion gases a way out and keep them from building up. EGR stands for exaust gas recirculation. The EGR valve opens at the appropriate time, usually on moderate acceleration to allow exaust gas to flow back into the combustion process through the intake manifold. It is a common myth that the reason is to "re-burn" exaust gas to use any remaining unburned fuel and improve gas mileage. Anybody who gives that explanation as to why they have an EGR valve, has no idea what he/she is talking about and probably should not be working on cars. Here is the real reason there is an EGR valve: Under certain conditions, esp when the engine is hot, fuel may actually burn too quickly, and thus not burn completely. In fact, spark knock or "ping" is caused by "pre-ignition detonation," the fuel actually ignites before the spark plug sparks. Pre-ignition detonation will cause an incomplete fuel burn, loss of power, bad gas mileage, and could even damage the engine internally. Under certain conditions you may want to slow the burn of the fuel, so that it is a more complete burn, and is at the right time. That is why you introduce exaust gases into the combustion process, to slow the fuel combustion just a little, so you can get a more complete burn, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce pre-ignition detonation. Here is a side point about pre-ignition detonation. Octane actually slows the burn process as well. That is how high octane fuels work, and why they reduce ping. The higher the octane, the slower and more completely the fuel burns. But with high octane fuels, you may want to consider where you are driving. If you are planning a trip to, or live in the mountains where the air is thinner, and there is less oxygen, you probably don't need a higher octane. The reason is that, with less oxygen, the combustion will be slowed in the engine already. Why slow it down any more? I hope this information helps.

Ok, This part is pretty hidden. On the series II engine. It is under the plastic cover. Take this cover off. Now on the passenger side is a black box with wires coming out of it and a numerical code and a bar code on this box. Now there is a twist clip on there. Compress this clip and then twist. The PCV valve is under this clip. Be careful not to break this black box. IT IS ATTACHED!!!! If this box is broken, the check engine light will come on. So be careful! Good luck!!

I hear it is located on the backside of the engine and its a SOB to get to. you actually have to rock the whole engine forward.

top left on engine, s shaped looking hose, extremely stiff, especially if you have 100,000 miles or more, you will probably break the hose getting it off,they turn very brittle so have a spare !

It is a toughie to find - until you know where to look. Right by the EGR valve, look towards the engine - it has a black hose going to the upper engine, once you look (use a flashlight, its easier) then you will see where it threads into the engine. A good item to replace when you are doing the plugs, as the upper intake manifold is already off.

Its In The Top Of The Valve Cover On The Passenger Side, Kind`a Hard To Change But Not As Bad Once You Start. It`s Near The Firewall, I Use A Pair Of Slip Joint Pliers Being Careful. Good Luck

the 2.3 and 2.4 engines dont have a pcv valve,they have an oil/air separator located on the right side of the engine as you look at the engine from the front.it looks like a black box with 3 hoses attached to it.

on the passenger side of the intake manifold is a small diamond shaped plate with two bolts, remove the bolt and the PCV is under that plate

The pcv valve on a 1989 Camaro is located in the top of the valve cover. It plugs into a rubber grommet and is easily replaceable.

The previous answer is somewhat ambiguous as to whether there is or isn't a PCV valve on a '97 Civic. I have a '97 5-speed Civic LX, and I just had a new PCV valve put in last week. There definitely is a PCV valve, but for this year/model, it is harder to find than on other years, where, apparently it is easily accessible at the top of the engine. Because of the location of the PCV valve in my Civic, I had to pay an extra $35 in labor for them to put it in. If in doubt, read your owner's manual! There is pcv valve on a '97 civic. The dealer schematics will tell you differently, but I've looked where the dealer schematics said it was and it wasn't. Don't waste your time looking for it cause it doesn't have one.

im not sure on a 1990 but on my 93 civic ex 1.6 vtec the PVC valve is on the intake right under the fuel rail

The PCV valve is located on the drivers side valve cover at the back, closest to the firewall.

There are pages and pages and items that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked for codes with a scan tool. After repair light can be shut off with scan tool.

Not sure about the 1989, but 1990-1993 it goes into the valve cover. Look for a hose running to the valve cover and the PCV valve should be what is at the end of it pushed into the valve cover.

facing the engine, look to the lef rear of the top of the engine. It is difficult to see because it under wired and hoses. If you stand to the left side of the engine, Passinger side, and thrust your fingers under the cable and hose mess on the top rear you will be able to touch it. It is easy to remoe the hose goes from the valve arround the back for about 4 inches

The vehicle will surge at idle because of the vacuum leak. If the PCV valve has come apart it will take you 2 seconds to inspect. Just remove it, turn it upside down and look at it. If the spring loaded valve is gone, it has come apart. Try lowing through it one direction, then the other. It should flow fairly easily one way, but should feel somewhat restricted the other way.

I have an 89 LSC and the PCV is located at the back of the plenum on the intake manifold. There is a hose coming out of it--pull up on the hose until the pcv comes out or the hose pops off of it----Its a stretch for sure and a flashlight is definitely recommended!

there is a wire filter under the pcv. a deck screw taped to the end of a Phillips screwdriver is the best tool to use to remove it for cleaning. when you replace your pcv, clean the wire filter under it. the pcv valve, grommet and wire filter are still available from the dealerships.
