Crankcases and PCV Valves

T HEMPLE On 89 4 cyl vacuum hose goes to a unit that screws into valve cover. Pcv inside of hole in valve cover. Have to remove pcv valve by putting needle nose pliars into hole in valve cover and pulling out pcv. In addition to new pcv you may need new O-ring. This info was hard to find as it was in a short paragraph in a repair manual. Maybe V-6 is similar. When you unscrew unit you cannot see pcv unless you direct a flashlight into hole in valve cover-easier to see at night

look om the passengers back side of the valve cover. You need to take off the vortec cover.

Yes it can. The pressure can get backed up into the vacuum areas of the motor and cause back pressure. The PVC valve will eventually get clogged so it it a good idea to change out the PVC valve at least once a year. It is a relatively cheap part and replacing it is definitely a DYI project. Should only take a few minutes.

Note* Be Careful with the Hose it is attached to. It may be old and could crack. If it does it can be replaced with automotive hosing that can be bought at any automotive store. Should be only a few bucks. If it is dried and cracked definitely replace it. Once again a DYI project that should take only a few minutes.

the pcv tube is between the intake manifold a little tube going into the engine. On the I4, it is located underneath the intake manifold, but slightly above the oil filter. It's difficult to see, but if you look from the driver's side through an opening under the intake manifold, you'll see a sensor. To the left of it and slightly below you should see the PCV valve. It's a little elbow with a clamp around it and a tube going out and will probably be covered in oil.

Looks like a tight fit to get to it.== Most likely, if you look for the valve cover, you'll see a little knob type thing sticking out with a fairly think rubber hose attached to it. If that isn't it, then follow any rubber hose leading from your vavle cover and you'll most likely find it. Yes you can, in fact it will even run smoother, but the dealer won't agree because they want you to spend that $$$. You will not get a cel as many claim as the plug is a useless heater element, nothing useful with a delete or by-pass. It's just as easy to fix with Expoxy or delete with a heater hose. There are many threads on how to fix, bypass with a catch can or simply delete it. It's a simple DIY mod, just depends on how much time and $$$ you wish to spend.

The PCV valve is on the drivers side of engine, just behind the intake for the air. There is a long black tube running under the intake, along the valley cover, and the PCV is just plugged into that. Just unplug it and replace it. The black tube is some type of phenolic plastic, be careful with it or you may break it. I had one which was broken and leaking oil on top of engine, replaced it with oil-resistant rubber tube, works well. AJ

I am currently looking for it. Two different auto parts stores couldn't find it on my 2.3 4 cylinder 1989 Mustang. But they both can sell it to me. Lol! I hope to find it before long. If anybody knows that reads this before then, post it here. I have a Chilton Mustang book for it. It tells you where the PCV valve is ... IF YOU HAVE A 5.0!!!! Gee thanks. When you get a new car, make sure they can tell you where all the maintenance parts are. There's no reason to pay somebody to do this easy stuff. But you have to be able to find the pcv valve, the fuel filter, the air filter. Even if you're a millionaire, it's good for the boy to get under a hood sometimes. But you have to be able to find it. I think it's really crappy of Chilton's to sell me a book that doesn't include the location of the 2.3 pcv valve because they say this is where you find the 5.0 pcv tells us they know it doesn't tell us where the 2.3 pcv valve is, and yet they STILL don't tell us where that 2.3 is, even knowing they haven't pointed it out yet. Maybe Chilton books aren't made in America?

replace the engine ================== The engine would at least have to be removed, cylinder head removed, oil pan removed, and new bearings installed with rods. If you get that far, you may as well overhaul the engine with new rings, seals, bearings, valve job, resurface cylinder head etc.. Either that or yes, get another engine. Either way its a lot of work or even more money to have a shop do it. -Shaun

Look on your valve cover. It should be connected to a hose going to your air breather.

It's takes 7 gallons or 28 quarts. The 4300 is the biggest and the filter alone holds 4 quarts (you must fill the filter with new oil to prime it.) Two 5 gallon buckets help with the extraction/recycling of old oil.

It is located in the intake manifold - there are 3 hoses connected via T-piece. The bottom hose goes into the PCV valve.

In my opinion it is really pointless to clean the valve, it can be replaced for about $5 to $10 dollars.

12 Valve cummins have a mechanical fuel pump & can be turned up to dump more fuel into the motor. 24 valve cummins are computer controlled & can get a substantial increase of power through a computer chip, module, or tuner. Both engines will also see a significant increase with bigger fuel injectors, aftermarket turbo(s), larger exhaust, larger fuel pumps, aftermarket intercooler, propane injection, water methanol injection, and nitrous injection. Its not so much turning up the power as it is turning up the amount of released fuel. you can also turn down the idle in the same area as the mechanism for the fuel. to the right of the first cylinder ( the one closest to the grill ) there is a cylindrical cast metal object simply remove the cover and there you have the idle adjustment, tight for low idle=less fuel idling or loosen for more fuel and faster idle. below the capped cast object there is a threaded rod with a nut on it, again loosen for more fuel=more smoke, cooler motor, and torque increase or tighten for less fuel=less smoke,less power, and more heat

Your PCV valve is a simple plastic piece of plumbing that performs a not-so-vital function for your engine. The Federal government, however, thinks it's very important. In reality it's an important part of your car's emission control system. If your PCV valve becomes clogged, your emission controls can't function fully, and the results are poor idling, loss of gas mileage, slow acceleration, loss of power and other similar ailments. There isn't a consensus on how often the PCV valve should be replaced, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-60,000 miles seems to make sense

I believe its behind the exhaust manifold. You can see it looking up from underneath. I haven't changed mine yet. Anyone know if its possible to change without removing the manifold? Seems unlikely.

look on the valve cover right behind the oil cap. if it is like mine it may just have a breather that looks like a cap in it's place. you just remover the breather thingy or pcv whatever the case may be and insert the new valve. if it just has the breather cap you may have to rerout an extra vacuum line to it from the main vac source or something.

The PCV valve on a VW cabrio, is the black circular thing sticking out the right hand side of the valve cover, its a dealer only part and costs about $80

it should not blow thru the PVC valve if it does means the cam bearings are bad its called blow by
