To advance the ignition to 14 degrees on '99. It's a matter to trick the ECU. How?, Repositioning the Crankshaft Position Sensor more upward. CPS is on the right down side of the Crankshaft Pulley. First, disconnect the CPS connector, remove the undercover, then remove the CPS bolt. Once out of the car proceed to enlarge the hole (bottom side) of the CPS bolt in order to get the upward reposition. Use portable Dremer to cut off ("bore") about 2-2.5mm from the integrated washer in the mentioned hole. Finally, install back the CPS having condider the following: Air gap between Pulley Plate teeths & CPS (Spec: 0.5-1.5 mm) and tightening torque of CPS bolt is 69.5-95.4 in-lbf. Past Specs were taken from the Miata'99 Workshop Manual.
After complete the installation. Use Timing light to check new timing. It should now oscillate between 14-16 degrees at idle instead of the factory oscillating 9-11 degrees."

I learned that there are no crank sensors referred in the manuals.
I bought it as a "Crankshaft Position Sensor'' but it`s referred as "RPM Sensor"
It`s position is on TOP of the flywheel next to the engine.
Directly UNDER the distributor cap and the camshaft sensor cover.

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR IS LOCATED AT REAR OF CYLINDER HEAD ON BOTH THE 2.0 AND 2.4. IT'S FARTHER BACK THAN THE IGNITION COIL, HIGHER UP THAN THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH.

The Crank sensor is located right above the oil filter (on 2.4) to the left of the starter if looking from the front of the car. Pull the oil filter off. There is a small clip to pull harness out, remove that, then the 10mm bolt that holds that in. The bolt is kinda hard to see and get to, becareful not to strip it out. fairly simple, good luck.

No it wouldn't, but jump starting the car or over heating the engine would crap out the sensor.

[Edit] '87 through '91 'LA' V8 and V6 use a hall-effect cam position sensor in the distributor and have no crank sensor, '92 and up 'Magnum' use a crank sensor which will be mounted at the upper rear of the engine to 'read' the flexplate or flywheel through a slot in the bellhousing.[Edit] The part is called a "pick up coil" it's a round piece with a wire going into it you can access under the distributor cap and does essentially the same task as crankshaft position sensors. Only on the 'LA' 170hp V8.

You must have been fooling with the distributor. You MUST have an engine scanner to set the timing on that engine. That will then put the cam and crank sensors back in correlation / Time with each other.
