What does the crank shaft sensor do exactly?
The Crankshaft position sensor, or (CKP) monitors the Crankshaft position and No#1 cylinder piston position while the engine is running. this information is sent to the engine's ECM. ( Electronic Control Module) the ECM then uses this information to calculate several operating parameters for engine performance but mostly it is used to operate the engine's Ignition system ( coil (s) and spark plugs). back in the day' you could replace your "points style distributor" for an "Electroinic-Ignition system" very much like todays MSD distributors. many of those used a Cam-sensor which essentially performed the same function. some used a Crank-sensor instead. basically:these sensors tell the ECM when to fire the spark plugs. before that it was all done with a set of "points" inside the distributor. hope this helps

Where is the crankshaft position sensor on a 3.0 engine in a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?
Most likely next to crank pulley that drives serpentine belt
For the 3.0 Vulcan 12 valve engine, it's on the front of the engine, just up to the left of the crankshaft pulley. One illustration indicates about the 11:00 o'clock position relative to the pulley, and may be obscured by waterpump.
On the 3.0 DURATEC 24 valve engine, the sensor is directly to the left of the crankshaft pulley, on the firewall SIDE of the engine. This one is easier to access through the passenger-side wheel well.
Note that the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) is only about 1 1/2" across with a small wire connector - about the only wired sensor in the general areas described above.
One last thing you may be curious about... The CKP sensors only cost about $20
1998 The crank sensor is located at the front of the engine (right side of the car) slightly to the right of the belt pulleys. It is approximately 2- 3/4 inches long and has a small cap screw on both sides that attaches it to the engine block. It has a wire lead that snaps into the top of the sensor. You can access both bolts from the top on a '98 - no sure about the '97. '96 -'99 are probably the same but would not bet on it.
if it is the 3.0L SHO motor it can be found through the passengers fender after removing the tire and the timing cover for the lower portion of the engine.

How do you the replace body - engine sub-frame and bushings on a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?
Hire someone that has done this repair before. I have done it a few times, It's no job for the weekend wrench turner. I have paid as little as $400.00 with engine cradle included and as much as $600.00.
Sometimes, especially if you live in the rust belt, you have to cut bolts out through the floor pan, replace a couple body mounts . It can be a nightmare job. Hire a pro. Good luck.
There is an extensive thread, with tons of pictures, regarding the sub-frame bushings at the Taurus Car Club site. There are also links to Ford TSB (service bulletins) regarding the rusting problem mentioned by ClRand676 above.

There is a ignition recall that sometimes pertains to this and ignition housing anti theft resister.
