Crankshaft Sensors

Yes. The composite/plastic tips crack. This in turns causes the wire connection to corrode. Replace it with an updated brass tipped version from saturn. Clean the connection or replace it if neccessary. It is also availlable from saturn.

We just replaced this, and it was inside the motor I think. I know they had to take off the plastic covering then open up the engine part, and it was right on top. Cost me about $110 with a new serpentine belt too.

it may have somthing in gas line or your fuel pump may be going out

Yes. I had this problem on a 2000 Grand Cherokee. The problem came without any warning that I could notice. I parked it at night and the next morning it would crank and crank but not start.

- I would imagine that his problem could happen gradually if the sensor had a broken lead wire or was gradually failing. In my case it was immediate and complete failure.

Before you change the sensor which is down on the front of the engine you need to see if the magnet is still in place inside the timing chain cover. On our 2000 ford escort zx2 the camshaft position sensor was located right below the oil cap. All it took was a 8mm ratchet. On a dodge neon the sensor is on the trans side of the head and is held on with either 2 or 4 screws. On other vehicles it is held in by one bolt.

The 3.1 engine has a crankshaft sensor behind the crankshaft pulley. Remove right front tire and inner splash panel for access. There is a second sensor on the back side (firewall side) of the engine above the oil pan on the block- near the center. Difficult to each. Bad news if you break this sensor since it can be brittle and difficult to extract if it breaks.

The Crankshaft Sensor on the 4.3 CMFI and CSEFI engines can be found on the front timing chain cover of the engine. It is best accessed from under the front of the vehicle.

CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR

The crankshaft sensor is located on the passengers side of the transmission housing, above the differential housing Crankshaft Position Sensor The bottom of the sensor sits above the drive plate

REMOVAL

Disconnect electrical connector from crankshaft position sensor.

Remove sensor mounting screw. Remove sensor.

INSTALLATION

Install sensor and push sensor down until contact is made with the transmission case. While holding the sensor in this position, install and tighten the retaining bolt to 12 N·m (105 in. lbs.) torque.

Connect electrical connector to crankshaft position sensor.

its located on the passenger side of the engine block towards the bottom. it can be accessed through the passenger side wheel well (easier if you take the wheel off) behind the rubber flap. directly to the right of the ignition coils.

1991 to 1993 3000gt do not have a crank sensor. Only a cam sensor. And when does go out the car will not start or have a very irregular idle.

the bottom of the engine, near the lowest pulley with the serpentine belt wrapped around it. on your routing diagram, that pulley will be marked "Crank" just behind this pulley there is a gear that looks like it's missing a tooth. look for something that either partially covers or is near that gear, that has a wire going to it, that's your crank position sensor. autozone.com has excellent diagrams for it's location.

if it is a 2.4 "x" motor, the crankshaft position sensor should be located in the front of the motor "TUCKED" up behind the starter. it is very difficult to find, but it s there.

It is on the lower right hand side of the bottom part of the timing cover, with a wire that leads up towards the alternator with a quick disconnect clip. You can use this wire to check the ohms on the sensor before you start the job of replacement.

you must remove both top and bottom timing belt covers to replace the sensor which means pulling the top torque motor mount and the crank shaft pulley, I recommend that I you are going to go this far on the 2.2 motor, I suggest that you replace the timing belt, oil pump seal and front main crank shaft seal while you are in there a new belt is around 40 bucks and the seal kit "TCS 45920" is about 15 bucks and to have a shop do it is about 450-500 bucks there are may youtube videos you can watch on how to do it but make sure you get a book on the procedure to check your work, any shop will tell you they have to bill for 6 hours, I did the job in 3 and I have never done this job before. its not that hard if you do your homework

The crank sensor is between the block and the radiator fan. It has a black cord that goes to a connector on the drivers side of the motor. All you need is a 10MM socket a short rachet extension and a 1/4" rachet. You should remove part of the air intake it hase on 10MM bolt and one 10MM nut. It sits on top of the radiator. When you have removed the intake you will see the sensor.

I had the timing belt on a 2001 Subaru Legacy replaced. After getting the car back, it was misfiring, and eventually the engine shut down. Dealer diagnosed faulty crankshaft sensor.

Anybody else have this experience?
