Where is the crank shaft sensor in a 99 Ford Contour Is this expensive and or difficult to fix?
On my 1998 and also 1996 they are located on the front of the engine at the transmission mounting, but on the engine side. If you look between the exhaust and the bellhousing flange on the engine you can see it. It has one plug in and one bolt holding the sensor on and is a little tough to get at the bolt. Also, if you are not sure what I like to do is get on eBay and look for a picture of one. It seems to really help.
Above applies to 4 cylinder engine I think. On the Duratec 6 cylinder, the crankshaft sensor is located on the timing cover, passenger side of vehicle, front corner, fairly low, close to the A/C compressOn a 4-cyl, ir pulley.
On a 1998 4-cyl, it's on the lower left (driversside) front engine. The brass bolt is a strar T30 bit. The actural sensor will pull out of the housing to give you more room. It's a tough area to get into. I took off my exhaust maniford after dropping the cat converter, to get more room since I was doing something else there anyways. These bolts came off easily even after all these years.

The crankshaft is connected to the transmission, which transfers power through the drive line, the rear end, through the axels to the tires, and the ground, thus moving the vehicle.
Have the system checked for trouble codes.
Where is the crankshaft sensor located on a Ford 6.0 Powerstroke?
On the passenger side of the engine block. It is approx. 1 to 2 inches back from the front of the block and just above the oil pan.
good location, i have a '05 f 350 with the 6.0. it's right behind the ac compressor but not behind to the rear behind if your looking at the tire. you have to remove the compressor, wheel well, ground wires, maybe the manifold bolts "i did" for the compressor. Good luck with the three compressor bolts holding it on, two 10mm, 1 13mm, cross members in the way can't see but is possible to get to have someone to hold a small flashlight helps a ton, ope this helps some poor folk that got stuck with a bad sensor, wish they would of designed it like the 7.3

What happens to a car that has a broken crankshaft?
The engine can be rebuilt, but you will obviously need a new crankshaft. Also, make sure that when you take the block to a machine shop, that they will align bore it. That's where they remove a small amount of material from the main-bearing mating surfaces and use a special boring rod to put the main's back into perfect alignment. If your crankshaft broke it's certainly possible that there was some damage to the alignment. If you have someone do it for you, make certain that they send it to an experienced machine shop. Too many shadetree mechanics don't have a clue about properly rebuilding an engine. Another possibility would be to get a "crate" engine from the dealership or some reputable specialists. Be careful when dealing with some of the discount auto parts houses. They'll sell "remanufactured" engines that have used parts, such as oil pumps or pistons. Read the labels and make certain that they at least CLAIM to use new parts and bore cylinders and recondition both big and little ends of the rods. Also you want NEW crankshaft and lifters. If youre asking what caused the broken crankshaft, there doesn't seem to be much of a specific cause. It's usually just time and a crankshaft that might have had a minor imperfection at manufacture. It is quite rare, but it happens. It would be difficult to force a crankshaft to break unless it were running high rpm and out of oil... but that would cause quite a bit of other damage as well.
