You really didn't give enough engine info, because there were three different 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engines in a 2000 Contour. But I am going to take a wild guess and say that you probably have an VCT engine. You will know because it will have a big "VCT" stamped across the valve cover, and a two-wire elecrical connector sticking straight out of the middle of the front end of the valve cover, close to the number 1 spark plug. That "VCT" means everything, because it stands for Varible Cam Timing, and is probably the at root of your problem. In the VCT system, the PCM actually advances and retards the exaust camshaft. I mean it actually clocks the cam itself either forward or backward by using a special cam gear that can literally be turned to a different position on the end of the camshaft. The PCM can actually turn it, by using a pressurized oil feed passage that applies oil pressure to a special mechanism inside the cam gear to reposition it on the camshaft, thus advancing and retarding the cam timing. Then it uses the cam sensor to moniter the camshaft position. If the PCM makes an adjustment to the camshaft, and then sees that the camshaft is in the wrong position by means of the cam sensor, it will set a P0340. I will tell you this. Those sensors are almost bullet proof. I have never had to replace a cam sensor on a Contour. I work in a shop with about 20 guys and there has only maybe been 2 of those sensors replaced in the last couple of years in my shop. They just dont go bad hardly. What does go bad is that special gear I just described and the VCT valve that the PCM uses to control it. A big contributing factor to causing these things to go bad in the first place is usually not changing the oil often enough or switching up brands of oil. The passages in those things are the size of a pinprick, and even the slightest tiny bit of sludge at all kills them. The exaust cam has to be removed to replace the VCT valve. INSTALLER BEWARE! It requires a set of special cam alignment tools to put it back together. There are no alignment marks and there are no keyways on the gears, so the cam gear will spin freely on the end of the camshaft once the bolt is loose. There is one more simpler possibility. That you have a problem in the VCT control wiring back to the PCM. It's that connector that is sticking out of the top of the valve cover. Inspect that wiring, and especially where it goes directly into that connector. Sometimes you get a break in that wiring, and the PCM loses control of the VCT. That will also set a P0340.
How do you install a crankshaft in a 400 cu in Pontiac trans am engine?
Completely disassemble the engine, thoroughly clean the block and all components. If the cylinders show signs of wear (ANY measurable taper) bore the cylinders and replace the pistons. Recondition the rods! If the crankshaft has been damaged ALL OF the rods must be either replaced or reconditioned. Replace all of the rod and main bearings. Inspect the camshaft and lifters for damage or wear and replace if necessary. The prudent mechanic replaces ALL even if only one shows signs of wear. Also, the prudent mechanic always reconditions the head every time the engine is apart. Reassemble the engine using new gaskets, oil pump and timing chain/gear as necessary. Never plan on an engine teardown that will only replace a single component, especially the crankshaft. Typically an engine suffers a great amount of damage when a major component, like the crankshaft, is damaged. If there is ANY indication of heating outside of the normal range, you may have slighly warped the block and you'll need to "align bore" it for the new crankshaft. This is not a good place to plan on an inexpensive repair.
The crank sensor (real name is crankshaft position sensor) senses when a notch on the crankshaft goes by and sends a pulse to the car's computer. This tells the computer where the crankshaft is in it rotation so that the computer will fire the spark plug at the correct time. This also allows the computer to change the timing under different conditions such as if gas of too low an octane rating is being used causing predetonation (called knocking) which is sensed by the knock sensor.
Why is there Coolant leaking behind crankshaft pulley on jeep tj 2002?
Check the hose that goes into your water pump but most likely it is a bad water pump dripping from the weep hole. I would replace the water pump if you can trace the water from that area
ignition starter switch
Where is the camshaft position sensor for a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant?
2001 2.4L SOHC is on the right side of the engine. "Standard" time is 0.3 hours but I just replaced mine in about 10 minutes. Make sure you detach the intake hose in the front by the airbox and loosen the rear clamp and tilt the hose up out of the way. Requires removing the cable clamp bolt for the ??? cable on the top front right side of the valve cover. And it helps to remove the cable guild bolt holding the cable next to the wires for the CPS itself to get wiggle room to remove and reinstall it. Once you get the intake hose out of the way you should be able to see what's going on.
What is the location of bank 1 oxygen sensor for a 1999 Hyundai sonata v-6?
In the Hyundai world bank one is always the firewall side, also called "right" side.
Where is the camshaft position sensor located on a 1995 Ford Ranger?
its mounted on the oil pump assembly behind the belt cover its mounted on the oil pump assembly behind the belt cover
Where is the sensor for a 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
It depends on which 'sensor' you are replacing. The crankshaft positioning sensor is on the lower left side of the engine, behind the oil filter. The CPS attaches to the bell housing. Search youtube for videos on replacing this particular sensor. Other videos may assist with other sensors.
91 Talon TSi has spark and fuel but wont start?
your water temp. sensor is unhooked or the wire is broken (common) it's a "t" shaped 2 wire plug on the thermostat housing
I think you mean the "Crank Sensor" since it's magnetic (The cam sensor is optical). Not sure how you could install the balancer incorrectly since it is "Keyed" onto the crankshaft. If the "Key" was missing you could get it installed other than at the right timing location but even then the metal tabs on the back of the balancer should still go through the sensor's slot ok. Unless the sensor is not adjusted correctly. Usually the crank sensor (Hall Effect) isn't effected by anything other than physical contact from something. I've seen them destroyed because someone used bolts that were other than OEM that were to long to install the crankshaft pulley onto the balancer That causes the metal tab (Sensor Flag) ring on the back of the balancer to be pushed into the sensor. TommyTrouble The cam sensor IS magenetic in these cars. BUT installing the balencer on the CRANK would not cause damage to the cam sensor, it would damage the crank sensor which is a hall effect. The cam sensor/magnet usually malfunctions on these cars. The cam sensor itself it easy to change, but the magnet is not.
Sounds like you might have a bad starter relay.
Dangers associated with this substance include temporary loss of physical and emotional control and psychological distress
Where is the cam shaft position sensor on a 1996 Ford Taurus?
if its a 4v it under the valve cover. if its a 2v it is on top of the half distributor at the rear of the engine under the throttle body.
Where is the 02 sensor located on 2001 Chevrolet Malibu?
All oxygen sensors are located in the exhaust system. Some have one in the manifold, some have one before the catalytic converter. Then others have one before and one after the converter. It requires a special socket to remove and replace it. Just because your code says oxygen sensor, does not mean it is bad. A vacuum leak can give a code that the sensor is reading lean.
Where is the crankshaft position sensor located on a 1999 ford zetec 2.0 liter?
it is below the valve cover.Take off the valve cover and it should be the cam shaft closer to you.If you are trying to retime engine you will need a special bar like tool to time it.This bar fits in the grooves at the end of the two camshafts on the drivers side.
You changed the temp sensor why is your engine light still on?
it has to be reset if you disconnect the battery for a few minutes should do it
How do you replace the crankshaft position sensor on 2005 f350 ford powerstroke?
The crankshaft sensor is located behind the air conditioning compressor, which is on the front of the engine. You can replace it using a socket. Tight area. Have replaced one on a 2005 F-350 6.0 powerstroke. Good luck.
What is the crankshaft position sensor air gap on 1989 3.3 buick century?
That would be around three feet and five inches, give or take.
Where are the crankshafts located on a 2002 Nissan Maxima?
the engine only has one crankshaft....but You should be able to find a shop manual at your local library with the right info...make copies as they are usually only in the REFERENCE section....good luck:)
