Why is forage quality so important when feeding lactating dairy cows?
Good to excellent forage quality is such that it contains high protein, energy, calcium, phosphorus and other essential nutrients (some which are naturally there and others that need to be mixed in with the feed), all which are necessary for a lactating cow. Milk production requires a lot of nutrition, so much so that a cow needs 50% more nutrition than if she was dry. Thus it is important that, in order to have cows that will produce high quantities of milk (as well as high quality milk), the feed must be of high quality nutrients.
In the olden days how did milk get to the factory's?
Factories didn't exist back then, at least back in the 1900's. Most folks had their own little "processing plant" to make butter, ice cream and milk for themselves to drink with the milk they got from the cow they had at home.
This will depend on how much milk she is still producing once she comes home. If her udder is still looking full you may be able to start milking her again. Keep in mind that she might have mastitis, treat it as you normally, and begin milking her. It is probably a good idea to see if she does have mastitis either way, if she does treat it and dry her off if she is not able to milk.
A month should not be too harmful to her, if she was producing milk before hand, however, anywhere longer than that you might not be able to begin the milking process.

The Schroedle Dairy was my grandfather's dairy. The actual address was 2923 S. Normal and was established in 1915. My grandfathers name was Peter Schroedle. How are you related? My grandfather was also named Richard Schroedle. I remember him refer to his brother Jake. Grampa didn't live near Crane Company, here worked there. He lived at 29th and Canal St. This was around the block from where I understand the dairy was on Normal Ave. My dad is Lawrence Schroedle. He remembers the barn being there. Do you know if they actually kept cows there or was this some type of distribution point for the milk? Did your dad drive a team of horses or did they have trucks? I've made contact w/Bill Schroedle on this topic and he says that the dairy started in 1915.

Because people are stupid and say 'oooh! I'm Italian, so I know everything about bulls...' (Alessia & Georgina) *cough cough.. When in the terms of reality, bulls cannot be milked... As a cocktail is given a fancy name that doesn't mean anything thing in real life so are these ignorant recipies. I hope that has helped as they really mean a female fricking BUFFALO.
