There were many great medical advances that occurred in the 1950's. A few of the best advances was the start of antibiotics, the polio vaccine, and the ultrasound.

It was the fear of communism which was started by Senator Joseph McCarthy. He accused 41 military officials of being communists with no proof as well as others. He was forced to resign when people found out that he had lied.

Auto sales boomed due to the increase of children and demand for transportation

The French colonized Vietnam in the mid 1800s. In 1885 France looked to take over Vietnam and in 1887 France completely took control of Vietnam.

Langlands Park School was owned by The Church of Scotland I think. It was down behind Port Glasgow cemetary, beside Sunnybank House. We always knew it as the bad girls school, I think it was wayward teenage girls who lived there. I remember being told years ago that there was an orphanage down there, but I'm not sure if it was Langlands Park or Sunnybank. I remember going to St. Martins church when I was little, and the girls from Langlands Park would be there. Don't think the building is there anymore, or if it is don't know what it is used for.

I bought one at an auction for $120 in 1986, then sold it for $250 in 1994. We called it "the Dinosaur", but it didn't fit in the tiny galley kitchen of our next residence. Wish I still had it...loved it!

Its a quote by JFK and its not really a question. I assume you know what conformity means, if not the quote doesn't make sense. Conformity is basically fitting in with the group, and since JFK is talking about the country, fitting in with other countries limits the USA's freedom and discourages growth. However, one can probably relate or apply this quote to their own life.

That depends on which Maverick you are asking about. There were several:

James Garner - known later for his "Rockford Files" series - started the series as Bret Maverick (a character later played by Mel Gibson in the 1994 movie "Maverick") When it was realized that production time was longer than the network would be happy with, the idea to add another Maverick came to be and so was hired:

Jack Kelly - known for his role in several films including the sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet" - as Bret's equally skilled and charming brother Bart Maverick. For the first three seasons, Garner and Kelly alternated as leads weekly and on some episodes appeared together. Garner filed a lawsuit against Warner Brothers at the end of the third season (although one episode filmed for season 3 ended up being shown in season 4) which resulted in his leaving the show and being replaced by:

Roger Moore - known later for his series "The Saint" and of course as James Bond - as cousin Beau Maverick. Having 'shamed' the family by receiving a metal for heroism in the Civil War (totally by accident) Beau was sent to England for a few years where he picked up a 'slight' English accent. (No effort to cover Moore's natural accent was even attempted) But near the end of season 4, Moore also left the show due to his dislike of the scripts. That led to the next Maverick:

Robert Colbert - known later for his sci-fi series "The Time Tunnel" - as Brent Maverick, the youngest of the Maverick brothers. He was removed after only two episodes leaving Jack Kelly's Bart Maverick to be the only Maverick during the final season although re-runs of Garner episodes were added to fill out the time.

All totaled the number of episodes played by each actor were:

Jack Kelly - 75

James Garner - 52

Roger Moore - 15

Robert Colbert - 2

As a side bit of trivia, there were a three other Mavericks in the series.

Beauregard "Pappy" Maverick - the often mentioned father of Bret/Bart/Brent, played by Garner under heavy make-up in season 3

Bentley Maverick - brother of Pappy and assumed father of Moore's Cousin Beau, played by Kelly under heavy make-up in season 3

Micca Maverick - not seen, but another brother of Pappy's and the reason Bret and Bart inherate a stage line in season 4's "The Maverick Line" (filmed for season 3.)

Actually, they aren't that much different. We think that the earlier time was safer and that people were happier, but this is all perception. It was no safer or less safer than we are today. In some respects we have things that make it safer than the 1950's. A cell phone is one thing that makes it safer. Instead of having to look for a phone booth we carry the phone with us. Cars are safer. In the 1950's there were no seat belts and air bags in cars. Airlines are safer because of the new methods of air traffic control and computers. These are just a few things that make it safer today.
