WQXR-announcers of WQXR in the 1950 decade?

The announcers on WQXR in the 1950s were: George Edwards (morning man) for Bright and Early, Just Music, Piano Personalities, The Luncheon Concert. Bill Strauss for Morning Melodies and Mid-Morning Concert and later became News Director. Al Grobe was the original daytime newsman, and Bill Gordon did the evening news. Peter Allen, Ed Stanton, Philip Stahl, Melvin Elliott, Chester Santon, Duncan Pirnie, Bob Lewis, Matt Thomas, Hugh Morgan, and later Lloyd Moss (the "baby" of the staff) and Gregg Whiteside came on board. Afternoon talk show with Alma Dettinger called Other People's Business came on at 2:30 following Footlight Favorites, Music In a Lighter Vein and Melodies of Old Vienna broadcast on alternate afternoons and the Mid-Day Symphony was broadcast at 3:00 with Cocktail Time at 5:00 following Listening with Jacques Frey in the mid-afternoon until early evening. The Dinner Concert at 6:00. Gala Performance was a night time broadcast once a week. Substitute announcers included Frank Waldecker, Dana Bate, Peter Grobe, Norman Rose et al., some were just one-time substitute; others became staff announcers such as James Irsay in the afternoon. Nights in Latin America with Pru Devon was a once-a-week program on Monday nights. Leonid Hambro & Jascha Zayde Played Duo-Piano classics live one night a week. June Le Belle was probably the only female staff announcer who came on board in the 1960s, I believe. When she retired, Midge Woolsey took over her spot. I know that Duncan Pirnie, Bill Strauss, Matt Thomas and Al Grobe are no longer with us. Alas, those wonderful voices that gave me the inspiration to become an announcer are long gone. WQXR had the best announcing team on radio, in my humble opinion. I studied their styles and as a teenager decided that was what I wanted to do. The last retiree was Lloyd Moss who is 80+ and his glorious voice was heard for decades on WQXR. I really enjoyed George Edwards, who made it sound so easy. Bill Strauss, whose elegant voice could be heard on The Doubleday Book Concert on Sunday mornings and Chester Santon, who I believe had the most beautiful speaking voice of all did Adventures in Sound on Sunday evenings. We will not hear their like again. Never! --MMK
