The current world record for a #18 1979-80 Wayne GretzkyO-Pee-Chee Rookie Card is $94,162.80.
The specimen, graded by industry-recognized card grading company PSA, was determined worthy of a GEM MINT 10 grade thus making it a perfect card - all things considered.
Some outrage and denouncement exist over the grade assessed due to what appears to be rough edges. O-Pee-Chee, at the time, used wire cutters to cut individual cards from card stock sheets. These wires would dull rather quickly and were not replaced near as often as one would expect. Considering that during this era, sports cards were still selling for pennies a piece and living their lives as a trade stimulator for other products, the quality control was not what it is today in terms of high-end collectible cards that have saturated the market in the last two decades.
When purchasing investment-grade sports cards, buying graded cards from reputable companies is still likely the better choice - along with due diligence and extensive industry knowledge. The difference between a Gretzky Grade 9.5 versus Grade 10 GEM MINT could yield a difference of several tens of thousands of dollars.

Now : No.
As of February 2011 they rank last in the NHL's 2010-2011 season.
Historically : Yes.
They won 5 Stanley Cups which is very good, even more considering the team only started in the early 70's. They were a major force in the 80's with star players such as Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson and, of course, Wayne Gretzky. In the last 20 years, their performances have been inconsistent with good years and bad years.
The Edmonton Oilers have won the Stanley Cup 5 times in total with the most recent win being in 1990. The team won in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990.
Not sure if it's THE best, but the 1967-68 Dallas Chaparrals had a 46-32 record their first year....
Value..........About $10 CDN. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to my research, the card is valued at only $8 on paper, and that's for a card in absolutely pristine, mint condition. That's slightly lower that the figure Jim Bunting quoted, so there may be regional differences in value depending on the popularity of the player. If you want a quick way to value a card and you've got Internet access, just do an advanced search of completed eBay auctions and look to see if any Palmateer RCs have been sold. That will give you factual data about what people are willing to pay for this card, regardless of what a book or Jim Bunting or I tell you. Over the last month or so, people have been willing to pay about $2.50, so it's not a hot time for a Palmateer rookie. The good news is that his memorabilia cards are raking in dough, so this is a great time to own or sell a jersey card, an autograph card, etc.

Surprisingly, not that many. The Oilers made it to the cup final, losing to Carolina in seven games in the 05-06 season.
Charters--especially when they have to fly out of town immediately following a game.
They are used as somewhat of a distraction, because when you look at the goalie, the first thing you look to is where you want to the puck to go, but if you concentrate on the mask, then the puck wont go where you want it to. i believe the first 2 goalies to have their masks painted were doug favel who had the "starburst" on his mask and gerry cheevers he had the stiches in his mask in the 70's
david is living in Alberta where he and his family are business partners in several different companies. He is still in communication with his oiler teammates. I just passed Dave Hunter in Calgary on 6 Ave SW. He was on his cell or I would have greeted him.Brian S., Oct 7/2005 at 9:35 AM
during the 2006-07 season Irbe played for HK Nitra in Slovakia and had a 1-2 record with a 5.31 GAA and .814 Sv%
Craig MacTavish was the last "bare-headed" NHL player. He retired after the 1996-97 season and is currently the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers.
Bruin's 6'9" and 260 pound defenseman Zdeno Chara is tied for the the tallest player of all time. And now Tyler Myers, also 6'9", at 222 pounds has tied him at 6'9"as a 2nd year player. He is only 19 so he could grow more. He plays for the Buffalo Sabres. Myers was also the rookie of the year in the 2009-2010 season.
Gordie Howe played for: . Detroid Red Wings (NHL) . Houston Aeros (WHA) . New England Whalers (WHA) . Hartford Whalers (NHL)
Gretzky, Marty McSorley, and Mike Krushelnyski were traded to Los Angeles for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million cash, and the Kings' first round draft picks in 1989, 1991, and 1993.
The Oilers first season in the NHL was the 1979-80 season.
The 1979 NHL Draft class was the first group of players who had to wear a protective helmet. Veteran players, those in the league prior to 1979 were able to continue playing without helmets. The last player in the league to play under the "helmetless grandfather clause" was Craig MacTavish in 1997.
I would have to say George Laraque.
Bobby Carpenter
Grant Fuhr won the Vezina Trophy as the league's most outstanding goaltender in the 1987-88 season
