Locate it. It's on the end of a black hose which enters the engine. Pull on it and it should come out. Remove from hose. SHAKE IT. If it rattles then it is probably good. However, if you haven't changed it for a few years it is best to do so at this time. Take the old one into any auto store and they will sell you a new one. They are inexpensive. Go home and install it.
If you have difficulty with any of this you really need be making friends with a mechanically inclined person who can give you a crash course in auto basics. Also, you should probably stay away from air pumps and maybe gas pumps.

Then you remove the three bolts to take off the plate covering the EGR valve, remove the two EGR clamps (one to the left, connected to the bellows, and one at the top of the EGR), drain the coolant and disconnect the two coolant lines to the EGR valve, unplug the EGR valve, and remove it.

This is a common problem. The best solution is to block off the EGR valve as you suspect and disconnect the sensor. I've done this with my 2002 Zafira and it cured the problem. All you need to do is disconnect the vac hose where is meets the throttle intake housing (the one that goes from the EGR to the Carb) and plug it at the intake. Go for a ride and see if the problem still persists....(I'm assuming it it sluggish or almost choking when accelerating from a stop or going up a hill) If there's no problem any more, it is a faulty or stuck EGR and needs replacement.

On the 4.6L engine, remove the nut and brake booster bracket. 4. On the 5.4L engine, remove the DPFE sensor retaining nuts and place the sensor to the side to allow access to the EGR tube. 5. Disconnect the EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube from the EGR valve. 6. Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts, then separate the valve from the intake manifold. 7. Remove and discard the old EGR valve gasket, and clean the gasket mating surfaces on the valve and the intake manifold. To Install: 8. Install the EGR valve, along with a new gasket, on the manifold, then install and tighten the mounting bolts. 9. Connect the EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube to the valve, then tighten the tube nut to 25-35 lbs. (34-47 Nm). 10. Connect the vacuum hose to the EGR valve. 11. On the 5.7L engine, install the DPFE sensor. 12. On the 4.6L engine install the brake booster bracket and the retaining nut. 13. Connect the negative battery cable.

Probably like mine. I have a 97 Grand Am SE with 3.1 V6. Its to the left of the manifold on the top round in shape. 2 bolts hold it to the throttle body. You might just try cleaning it before to see if it just has a carbon buildup. I did that and my idle problem went away.

look behind your thermostat housing on the intake manifold you will see the egr valve if your not a California model u wont have one though

Most likely the egr ports in the intake manifold are plugged.This requires the removal of the upper intake manifold.Then you can access the egr ports and clean them with a coat hangar and a power drill.The ports clog up as a result of poorthe poor fuel quality we get here in north america.Honda makes a speacial repair kit for these egr problems consisting of a neww egr valve intake gaskets and a metal tube that is inserted into the egr port to eliminate the build up of carbon deposits in the ports.Good luck.
