A member of her council, Robert Cecil stated she was "settled and [in] unremovable melancholy". She refused to take to her bed most likely terrified she would die if she laid on her bed. After days of refusing the essential needs to live, she took to her bed, her throat had severe and one would assume painful ulcers in it, contributing to her death. She died clutching the hand of a priest who sat at her side until her death.
