What do the sharks symbolize The Old Man and the Sea?

The shovel-nosed sharks are little more than moving appetites that thoughtlessly and gracelessly attack the marlin. As opponents of the old man, they stand in bold contrast to the marlin, which is worthy of Santiago's effort and strength. They symbolize and embody the destructive laws of the universe and attest to the fact that those laws can be transcended only when equals fight to the death. Because they are base predators, Santiago wins no glory from battling them.

So basically it symbolizes the problems you encounter in life (the sea).

What flashbacks does Hemingway use in the book The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway?

Flashback is especially useful in this story because of the mountainous amounts of time Santiago has to just think. Because of this, the story often goes back into his memories, for example, when he recalls the arm-wrestling competition. Also when he remembers all the times he and the boy went fishing together. His reoccurring dream is a flashback as well as he remembers the lions that relaxed on the beach from his past years. These flashbacks help the story because they give it background to who Santiago is and his personality.
