Magellan proved 5 things
1.) It is possible to circumnavigate the world.
2.) That the Earth was round and not flat.
3.) That you can reach the East by sailing through the West.
4.) The discovery of a large body of water which he named the Pacific Ocean.
5.) A way to reach the East without violating the Treaty of Tordesillas.

Magellan was the first person to lead an expedition across the Pacific Ocean. He discovered the Strait of Magellan, near (near the bottom of South America) the most important route between the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans prior to the Panama Canal. He was the first European to reach the Philippines. Magellan was killed there, but his crew went on from there to become the first explorers in history to go all the way around the world.
He discovered new animals -penguins, and animals in South America that he called "camels without humps."

No i am a social studies teacher and remember that Magellan went arund the world
>>For a social studies teacher, your answer is gramatically, syntaxically, and informationally rather lacking.
Magellan did end up claiming quite a few areas for Spain on his voyages, such as the "Spice Islands". However, he is remembered for sailing around the world (although he himself didn't quite make it all the way--he was killed halfway).
This had been known since the ancient Greeks. It is a fable that people didn't know this. Despite the fact we have seen earth from space there are people who think the earth is flat.
His death was not what sparked WWI -.- that was Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Ferdinand Franco was the Fascist dictator of Spain that later got killed by his people.
The Spaniards didn't want the Portuguese to get any glory
From his point of view, he had permission from the King, who was given authority by the Pope, to do exactly what he did.
From the point of view of the Filipino people, of course he did not have the right to claim ownership of a country 10,000 miles away with its own languages and cultures.

Magellan, though Portuguese by birth, captained a Spanish fleet with the intention of reaching the Spice Islands (Maluku, Indonesia) by sailing west around South America.
The expedition, from 1519-1522, became famous as the first to sail completely around the Earth. After Magellan was killed during a battle against natives in the Philippines (1521), the Basque captain Juan Sebastian Elcano took command and completed the voyage by sailing west around Africa. Only one ship out of the original five made it back to Spain, and only 18 of the 270 crew members (4 others survived and returned after capture by the Portuguese).
