What were George Washington's false teeth made from?

Washington wore many partial and full dentures over the course of his life, but contrary to popular belief, none were made out of wood. Instead, they were made from ivory, lead-tin alloy, copper alloy, silver alloy, real human teeth, and probably cow and horse teeth, too.

Dentures made of wood weren't common in his time, and although his false teeth were very uncomfortable, they were also fairly advanced for the late 18th century. The wooden teeth myth probably stems from the fact that as the ivory dentures were used and stained, they developed a grainy look, possibly being mistaken for wood.

Unfortunately, the real human teeth he used were likely purchased from slaves, and they didn’t really have the option to refuse the purchase.

What does morphology mean?

Morphology means "the study of form".

No, not on the race track. "Form" here refers to the shapes of structures.

In biology, plant morphology includes the study of the different shapes of leaves, for example, and root systems. Animal morphology studies the shapes of whole animals, or parts, including internal organs (e.g. liver morphology). Morphology is often linked to physiology: form and function. Biologists try to relate the shape and the functioning of structures in animals and plants. "Morphology" is also used in other contexts, such as geomorphology. Morphology is also a linguistics term, and involves the study of the structure of words in a language and the study of word formation.

What do you do about thinning of denture plate and small holes?

Dentures are made to last between five to seven years. Perhaps your denture is way above and beyond this measurement of time, and if so you've gotten your money's worth. The denture plate can be rebased, but can only be done by a dental lab or a public denture repair business. Rebase means, to get rid of all the denture acrylic that is at the bottom of the denture that connects to your gums and put new denture acrylic on that area. Once the denture material is taken off, a dental model of your mouth must be provided in order for the denture acrylic to fit snugly around your current gums. To make a dental model of your mouth, a dentist must make an impression of your mouth with the denture in the impression material. Once the denture is sent to a denture repair business, the re-base process can begin, giving you a possible thicker gum line. Some precautions though, you see what you are trying to do is use your old denture to make a new denture. The acrylic gum area may or may not be thin, this is because you are getting the new denture acrylic on an old denture. Small holes, along with a thinning plate sounds like your mouth has changed so much that you may be better off at getting a new denture rather than re basing the old one. Small holes do form when your mouth changes shape, meaning the position of your gum tissue has changed making your mouth wear the dentures into holes. Re-basing is sometimes not the right solution as a new denture is. You can send your dentures to a business that solely focuses on denturerepairservice.com.

Why are cavities bad?

Cavities are bad because they can damage your teeth and they wont look good anymore. If you eat to much sugar you'll get a fill (AKA, a cavity) and that is very bad care for your sensitive teeth!

How do you know if you really have cavities?

The signs and symptoms of cavities vary, when a cavity is just beginning, you may not have any symptoms at all. As the decay gets larger, it may cause signs and symptoms such as:

1) Toothache, spontaneous pain or pain that occurs without any apparent cause

2) Tooth sensitivity

3) Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold

4) Visible holes or pits in your teeth

5) Brown, black or white staining on any surface of a tooth

6) Pain when you bite down

In such cases, we recommend you to visit the dentist at the earliest before the issue reaches the level where you would need root canal or maybe worse extraction.

Will cavities kill you?

yes. If you wait too long to get a cavity filled, then it can infect other parts of your body and cause you to die. For instance, I saw this on the news and one boy never went to the dentist in his life and he was like 12. He had a bad cavity and it went to his head. Yup that's right I said it.His HEAD. So if you have a cavity and you've had it a while, get it fixed ASAP. If you just got it don't sweat it. It takes a while for them to erupt and you'll probably have an appointment coming up. Hope this helps!

How much do dental fillings cost?

DENTAL FILLINGSTHE COST of a filling will vary greatly, depending on who you go to and the type of filling. An amalgam ("silver") is cheaper than a composite (white), but the best way to tell is to just call a local dentist from the phonebook and ask them. The more affluent the area, the more they will cost. If you NEED a tooth filled and are afraid that you can't afford it, check to see if there is a TEACHING HOSPITAL in your area. Graduates of dentistry doing their residencey will be MUCH cheaper. When I was younger and didn't have dental insurance, that's what I did and had no problems at all...........<<>> FillingsI had 6 fillings done around a year and a half ago and I had the white (light cured) fillings done. My insurance cost was about $75 per tooth. The silver was free but I didn;t choose that because the silver can put cracks in your teeth and make them sensitive. CONTINUEDYears ago, when composite (white) fillings were becoming popular, I decided to have all my fillings done that way,(at the "suggestion" of the dentist). After only a few years, the fillings on the chewing surfaces started to crack, and I had to have them replaced with regular silver (amalgam) fillings by another dentist. He explained to me that composite fillings are best for non-chewing surfaces that are visable. Silver fillings are still the strongest, and most durable for chewing surface teeth. I think the first dentist that did all my fillings in composite was in it for the extra money. <<>>

COST

I just went to the dentist and my fillings are going to be $220 a piece. The fillings are from not flossing, but I guess cost vary since my coworker had a filling that was only $90 allegedly

How do you clean dentures?

The Best Way to Clean Your Dentures

As a Dental Technician for the past 44 years, I have made thousands of dentures and this is what I recommend:

First, look to see if your denture has a soft liner. This will be a soft surface on the denture side that fits against your mouth. If you are not sure, press the surface with you fingernail. If it makes a mark then you likely have a soft liner in you appliance. Second, if you see any silver metal on your denture either clasp or silver palate DO NOT use step 6 below. Doing so will make your soft liner turn hard and any metal will get a tarnished color.

1- Always brush your denture over a sink full of water. The most likely place you will damage your denture is dropping it in the sink while it is being brushed. It takes just a few seconds to fill the sink and you will be glad your did when you drop it.

2-Brush your denture with a denture brushavailable at any drug store. Never use a standard tooth brush. The bristles in a normal tooth brush are made of nylon and will cut groves in your denture acrylic.

3-NEVER brush your denture back and forth like you were scrubbing the kitchen floor, Brush you denture from the top to the biting edge of the tooth like you would natural teeth.

4- Baking soda is an excellent cleaner for your denture. You can also use regular tooth paste is you prefer.

5-Soak your denture in a glass of plain water or you may add a little baking soda to the water to soak overnight.

6-About once a month you may soak your denture in a glass of half water and half Clorox over night This will remove any stains that have attached to your denture. Once a month only, you do not want to bleach the color out of your denture.

It is not necessary to use any commercial cleaner on your denture and many may actually harm your denture. If you have had to avoid step six above do not use commercial cleaners. Most use oxidizing agents the same as a Clorox solution. They will in time damage the soft liner and tarnish any metal on your appliance.
