Firefighters

Firefighters not only respond to fires, but also to emergency situations, such as auto accidents, when there is a possibility that a fire might result. In our Firefighters category, you can ask questions about what firefighters do, what their jobs are and the pay rate, how they help in ways other than fighting fires, how to become a firefighter, and anything that has to do with fire fighting and those who fight them.

How often do firefighters actually save a home from being destroyed?

Depending on how soon the fire is reported and the severity of it, the home may or may not be able to be saved. The priority on a fire scene is safety of persons over property.

Contrary to most people's beliefs, firefighters don't just run in a burning building spraying water. Firefighters search the building to make sure that nobody is inside it first. Of course, preventing further damage to property is also a task, but will take less priority over rescuing someone.

There is a firefighting quote that goes along the lines of:

"Risk vs. Reward.

Risk a lot to save a lot,

Risk a little to save a little to save a little

Only if it is justified."

If a house is fully involved in fire the chances of saving it are slim to nothing, and at that point the main priority is to make sure everyone is out and the fire isn't spreading. Of course, the fire will still get put out, but there is very little that can be done to actually save a home after a major fire.

If a fire is contained and put out while it is just a room, the house is more likely to be able to be easily repaired and livable.

Can you be a firefighter with a misdemeanor?

This would largely depend on the department that you are seeking employment with as different departments in different states, and even in the same state may have vastly different policies concerning employment of individuals with past felony convictions. Your best source of information would be the department that you are interested in working with as most are government organizations and as such will have publicly available information about any job that they may have available.

When do firemen use a body harness?

In general, fire fighters use a body harness for the same reason others who wear them do -- protection. Sometimes firemen work in shafts or on exposed areas high in the air. Under many of these circumstances, we'll see a firefighter put on a safety harness (and there are several different kinds). He'll be strapped into (wearing) the harness and will be hooked up to safety lines, or he might be tethered to a line that actually supports his weight so he can be, say, lowered into a hole in the ground to effect a rescue.

Can firemen enter a house without consent?

If they get a 911 call and are responding to a emergency and when they arrive and no one answers the door they are legally aloud to force entry into a building. Also if there is a fire and no one is answering the door, again they can force entry to both fight the fire and protect anyone inside the building.
