I'm just making an educated guess but you should be able to charge the device if it is turned off. If it is turned on when attached to the 0.5 amp blackberry charger it will probably not be able to charge and power the device at the same time. My guess is it will eventually turn off because the load to run the Tom-Tom is higher than the 0.5 amp delivery. I know of a similar situation with the HTC Kaiser when GPS is enabled where the unit eventually drained all the power even when connected to a car charger that was under 1.5 amps.

Yes, i just did it. the easiest way is to get a female car socket adapter (the have them at radio shack or auto part stores) or get an extension cord for a car port and cut off the male end. then plug your charger into that.

next you buy something called add-a-circuit (also you can get it at auto part stores) you crimp the red wire from the female adapter to the add a circuit wire, you attach the black wire from the adapter to any bolt on the frame that's grounded (most should be.)

then you plug the add-a-circuit into an open port on the internal fuse box in your car. that or take a fuse out of one spot and add it to the add a circuit.

be sure that the spot you put the add a circuit in is one that only charges when the car is on. otherwise your GPS will run non stop and drain the battery. check your owners manual for the fuse box location and which fuses are for what.

Thinking that you left out some of your text in the question I'm going to say it's your emergency flasher or hazard light button. Especially on imports these will be buttons mounted mid dash with a triangle and the image of an illuminated light bulb inside the triangle.
