It is something to do with the solar Radiation or radiant heat as it travels in straight lines and if its in a cloudy day you cant because the radiant heat energy travels in straight lines.

most micoorganisms that eat other microogranisms take what they can get. i don't believe there is a specific microorganism that strictly eats hydra but your best bet would be a type of ameba of carnivorous cilliate. sorry this probably isn't very helpful :/
