What do Guatemalans think about punctuality?

Guatemalans are generous, warm, polite, and humble. They value honesty, family unity, personal honor, work, and education. Optimism is less common than the acceptance of misfortune. People often believe they are unable to change their condition, either for lack of empowerment or because some things are God's will. Personal criticism, taken seriously, should be avoided. Punctuality is admired but not strictly observed; people are considered more important than schedules. This manner of keeping time is referred to as la hora chapina (the Guatemalan hour). Guatemalans are gracious, love to make jokes of almost any situation, and strive to make any social interaction comfortable. The phrase No tenga pena (Don't worry) is commonly used to set others at ease.

Family status and wealth are important to ladinos. Many consider the Maya to be inferior and uncivilized, and they avoid contact with those who do not adopt ladino ways. The Maya, who have long been subjected to discrimination and human-rights abuses, desire to be treated as equals. Maya who wear Western clothing and assimilate into ladino culture are treated somewhat better.

While the peoples of Guatemala are diverse, they have in common a desire for a tranquil life. Guatemalans are cautiously optimistic that the 1996 accord has brought peace.

How is the Guatemalan culture different from the US?

One of the differences is the food. Although both the US and Guatemala have a great variety of international restaurants, it is not as common for the citizens of Guatemala to eat in these restaurants; they are mainly for tourists. Most Guatemalans prefer to eat food typically associated with Mexico, tortillas, salsa, beans, etc. However, there are also foods cooked by the different indigenous populations (i.e.; bushbol, a dish cooked by the Ishil population.)

A second difference is transportation. Although, of course, people do drive automobiles in Guatemala, biking and walking are much more common there than in the United States. There is public transportation (buses, trains) in the cities, in the extreme rural areas, even cars are not common. People there walk are ride horses and burros or mules.

As is previously alluded to in the first paragraph, there are a number of indigenous populations in Guatemala, each with their own language, food, music, and culture. Also, some indigenous people have their own way of dressing. The United States also have indigenous populations, but many have lost their native culture and have adapted the larger American culture.

Another difference, and probably the biggest difference, is that Guatemala is, by and large, a collective society, whereas the US is more an individualistic society. This means Guatemalans prefer to do most things in groups, and the good of one person in a group, is good for all in that group. In the US, it is more common that the good of one person, is primarily their success alone.

Why are Guatemalans so SHORT?

In order to grow tall, people need carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins. The excess of corn in the Guatemalan diet lacks the necessary protein, fat, and vitamins. The outside and inside of a human cell is made of fat. Without adequate fat in the diet, a human child can not produce the cells required to grow tall. Cells require proteins and vitamins to function.

When Guatemalan children become illegal aliens in the United States and start receiving an adequate diet, they grow as tall as everyone else. As long as los banditos roam unchecked through the Guatemalan countryside life unsafe, the people will not be able to grow crops providing well balanced diets.
