The first Gulf War was fought to liberate what country?

The Gulf War (1990-1991) included Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, and was fought to liberate the country of Kuwait on the Persian Gulf.

Kuwait had been occupied by the forces of Iraq, then ruled by Saddam Hussein. Claiming that Kuwait was historically part of Iraq, Saddam ordered the invasion and occupation of the country in August, 1990. A coalition of forces led by the US expelled the Iraqis between January 17 and February 28, 1991.

How did japan help during the gulf war?

Japan has a US originally enforced (via GEN MacArther during WW2 occupation) constitution that has OUTLAWED war. Consequently, Japan is not allowed to have an Army, Navy or Air Force; as those imply "war." But Japan does have the right to defend itself; Therefore Japan does have a Land/Ground "Self-Defense Force"; a "Maritime Self Defense Force" and a "Air Self Defense Force." During any crisis in the Southwest Asia regions such as the Persian Gulf areas, Japan has supplied (WHEN REQUESTED) supportive assistance to include repair expertise/facilities/parts/maintenance or medical. Primarily for US forces, as again, from the WWII occupation days, that's what the US used Japan for...repair facilities, which really got going during the Korean War (1950-1953). Example: Toyota got their new start (after being nearly destroyed in WWII) from building US Army trucks and jeeps for the Korean War. Be advised: The US has been involved in several Persian Gulf Wars; which one concerns your question? 1. Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) 2. Operation Desert Storm (Jan/Feb '91) 3. Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003- )

What percentage of US soldiers died in Desert Storm?

Less than 200 US servicemembers died during the campaign; the largest number about 30 died in their barracks when a missile struck it. Another dozen or so died from friendly fire.

Why would Saddam Hussein make the women cover their faces?

A Muslim woman wears hijab for the simple reason that God has commanded it in the Quran and Sunna. As Muslims we make the testimony "Muhammad is the messenger of God". The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would not be a messenger if he did not come with a message, and his message is the Quran. Therefore, we are really saying "The Quran is the message of God". Our faith in God motivates us to obey God's message and that is why we follow what God has commanded in the Quran.

That is the explanation.

How did Saddam Hussein kill many people?

Saddam probably killed a small number of people with his own hands, i.e. around a dozen or so. However, he was responsible for numerous genocides around Iraq which resulted in around 200,000 deaths, he was responsible for the Iran-Iraq War, which claimed the lives of over a 1,000,000 people, he was responsible for the invasion of Kuwait all lives lost in that conflict, etc.

What is Chris Ryan's real name?

The entire answer below has been cut-and-pasted verbatim from the discussion page about Chris Ryan on Wikipedia.

Chris Ryan's real name is Colin Armstrong.

In The One That Got Away (1995, ISBN 0712676163), 'Ryan' claimed to have won the Military Medal (MM) for his actions in the Gulf War, and of being notified at the end of June, 1991[1]. Only fifteen MMs were awarded for this operation[2], nine of these to members of the Special Air Service. The London Gazette, lists three as posthumously awarded (including Consiglio and Lane)[3][4], and six awarded to unidentified members of the 'Special Air Service Group', dated 29th June, 1991[5]. In subsequent editions of The London Gazette, through the 1990s, six Military Medal recipients were individually named, and Gazetted for services in the Gulf, and back dated to 29th June, 1991. Five of these six were attributed to The Parachute Regiment, and the remaining one, to The Duke of Wellington's Regiment - neither of which were deployed in the Gulf War. This accounts for all six recipients being the 'unidentified members' of the Special Air Service Group.

In The One That Got Away (1995, ISBN 0712676163), 'Ryan' claimed his parent unit was The Parachute Regiment[6], which leaves five possible candidates for the true identity of 'Ryan'. Of these five, one continues to work for Olive Security Group in Iraq using his real name[7] and the British Army service numbers of two others pre-date that of even Steven Mitchell (24428654)[8], who claims in Bravo Two Zero (1993, ISBN 0552141275) to have served in the British army for two years before 'Ryan' had enlisted[9]. Of the remaining two, British Army service number of one is consistent with the early-mid-1980s, while the other (24496702) is consistent with the late-1970s which is when 'Ryan' claimed to have joined the British Army[10].

By a structured process of elimination, the only remaining MM recipient that could possibly be 'Chris Ryan' is Colin Armstrong.

What political factors are important to the scond Persian gulf war?

Political factors were important in all three wars (Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988; Operation Desert Storm Jan/Feb '91; and Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003-). Definition of war: The obtaining of a political goal, by other than political means. ____________________________________________ 1) The Iran-Iraq War was not a "gulf war" although the Persian Gulf was an area of conflict for part of it, and a US Navy warship was attacked there. The war was fought entirely between Iran and Iraq, with no other countries in the world siding officially with either. It lasted for eight years with no victor, was mostly fought on the Iran-Iraq border, and fought entirely between Iranian and Iraqi forces. Iraqi dictator Sadaam Hussein started the war. 2) The Gulf War, also called the Persian Gulf War, fought from 1990-91. Iraq invaded Kuwait, prompting many other oil-producing and oil-consuming nations to join an international coalition to expel Iraq from Kuwait. Sadaam Hussein started this war too, which included both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. 3) Sadaam Hussein did not start this one, and nothing he could have done would have prevented a US invasion of Iraq to secure land between the Caspian oil reserves and the Indian Ocean. After eleven years of non-participation in the Afghan Civil War, a war that the US caused, US forces were finally committed to Afghanistan. This war is known by the inspiring names of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the War on Terror.

Patriot missiles during desert storm?

Primary mission of the Patriot missile during DS? KEEPING ISRAEL OUT OF THE CONFLICT! Explanation: 1. President Bush Senior knew that Iraq would be no competition, and easily defeated. 2. Saddam Hussain knew that too! 3. Saddam had only one chance against the US, and the US knew what that "one" chance was too! 4. If (a big "IF") Saddam cold turn the US/Iraq war into a HOLY WAR, that would save Iraq (and save Saddam too). 5. The only way to turn Operation Desert Storm into a HOLY WAR was to involve Israel. The US knew this too. 6. At all costs the US was to restrain Israel from entering the conflict. If Israel entered the fight against Iraq...it quickly would become a real war (verses a quick and dirty military campaign). 7. All parties knew these facts. Saddam fired SCUD missiles into Israel to start a fight...up until 1991, Israel always had had a reputation for counter-attacking ANYBODY that attacked them. Translation: Pick on Israel...and you had a fight on your hands! 8. Consequently, the Bush Sr. administration begged, borrowed, and pleaded (and ultimately bought Israel's word against joining the battle) by virture of giving them the Patriot Missiles to destroy Saddam's SCUDs. 9. It worked! Israel never joined the fight. Saddam never got his HOLY WAR. And Desert Storm concluded on or about 26 February 1991, less than two months after it started. Mission Complete. Note: The Patriot was simply an air defence weapon system; originally designed to knock down planes, but after the cold war ended (and no planes remained to knock down), the Patriot remained an anti-missile defense system...sense missiles are likely to remain a more common threat than any future jet fighter bomber.

What was the home front like during desert storm?

DS made CNN; the whole nation couldn't get enough television news (primarily from CNN); newspapers had front page headlines "from the storm" for nearly 45 days! Parades, Tears, Laughter, total elation of a United States victory! President Bush SENIOR made a speech to the American people: "WE HAVE FINALLY BEAT THE VIETNAM SYNDROME... AMERICA IS UNITED AGAIN AT LAST!"

How old were the soldiers that fought in Desert Storm?

For US Forces, 18 and above was the average age of enlistment.

How effective would a modern Anti-Shipping missile be against an armoured warship like the USS Iowa?

The Iowa class "fast" battleships of WW2, have armor that is no longer produced. Modern missiles might not penetrate the sides of their hulls, which contain the thickest belts of armor. Today's missiles were not designed to destroy WW2 battleships. Missiles fired at those WW2 battlewagons would have to strike vertically onto the decks, called "plunging fire", striking the thinnest armor, which is the deck area. Repeated hits of plunging fire, would ultimately sink the ship. Unless the missile is a nuclear weapon, it is simply a guided self propelled battleship shell flying towards it's target; delivering the same pay-load as a standard shell; or possibly a super powerful battleshell shell...either way, a conventional (non-atomic) projectile.
