Traditionally US Army personnel have not been issued camoflage uniforms as general issue (general issue means issued to everybody). The first general issue of camoflage uniforms for the US Army was possibly the green camoflaged BDU's of the post Vietnam War 1980's (BDU-Battle Dress Uniform). Desert Storm saw the first general issue of "Desert Camoflaged Uniforms & boots" for the US Army. Those uniforms have changed at least twice again during the current Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-to present).
During Desert Storm, the popular term for the Desert Camoflage used was "Chocolate Chip Cammies", which were much different than the DCU's (Desert Camoflage Uniform) of the early OIF/OEF campaigns. Currently all the services utilize their own combat uniform except the Navy, which maintains the DCU (For the time being).

While it is true that Kuwait and parts of southern Iraq were part of the Vilayet of Basra in the Ottoman Empire, the Vilayet of Basra constituted less than 30% of modern Iraq in terms of land area. Iraq was established by the British colonialists who united several different Ottoman territories under one monarchy and they divided Kuwait off of the main group.

Why does Andy McNab not have any pictures of him taken?
McNab claims for security reasons.
McNab makes appearances at book signings and is available for motivational public speaking engagements, so his security is clearly not a concern. One reason there are not many photos of him on the Internet is that most web sources for McNab information tend to be fan sites. Many of these same sites also disseminate the false rumour that his real name is a state secret. According to McNab himself, there is no law concerning his identity, only 'common sense' concerning his celebrity status (he says he receives a lot of hate mail from people claiming he sold out the SAS regiment, and has lied in his stories about his own exploits solely to make money). McNab's real name has even been published by the British Government, so it's certainly not a state secret as far as they are concerned.
McNab claimed to be the British Army's most highly decorated soldier when he retired in 1993, holding both the DCM and the MM. A cross check of the British London Gazette shows that only one soldier held both these medals in 1993. That soldier was Steven Billy Mitchell, which is the real name of Andy Mcnab.
Amazon.com lists Mr. McNab's work under fiction.
