What happened to the monasties when Henry closed them?

For the most part they were sold to wealthy private buyers amongst the Nobility and Gentry! Both Catholic and Protestant bought them! The money went in to the Kings Coffers, while the monks and nuns obtained pensions and carried on some sort of religious life, quite often.

Some monasteries were turned in to schools and other monies gained from the monasteries went to pay the cost of bishoprics that were formed.

Was Henry IIIV Catholic or protestant?

Henry was christened Catholic but when the church refused him a divorce from Catherine of Aragon so he could marry Anne Boleyn, he fought it and was excommunicated for his formation of the Church of England so he and England became Protestant except for a few hold-outs who were persecuted for the few Tudor reigns.

What was Katherine Howard's last view before she died?

Catherine Howard (c1520 - 1542) was much younger than Henry VIII (1491 - 1547). She made the treasonable mistake of having an affair with a cousin of her mother's, Thomas Culpepper. When King Henry was given the details of her adultery, he is said to have cried, as he had always thought of Catherine as his "rose without a thorn". Catherine (a cousin of Anne Boleyn's) was beheaded on 13 February 1542, at the Tower of London, having asked for the block to be brought to her the night before, so that she could practice placing her head upon it. The scaffold and block would have been her last view therefore, before a blindfold was placed around her eyes.

What were the concequences of Henry viii closing down the monastries?

From my opinion Henry closed the monasteries as he wanted money. Wealth was an important reason as he could get money from land from the catholic church and gold from the church as well. He wanted a divorce as well as being greedy for money as he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn so he could try to have a son however the pope would not grant this divorce as he was held hostage by King of Spain who was Catherine of Aragons father. So this is a main reason why Henry closed down the monasteries. Another reason was power he was sick of the monks and priests taking orders from the pope as he wanted to boss people about and so did show him who was boss and became in charge of the reformation this made him powerful. One large identification made by the king himself was that the monasteries needed to go monks doing usual daily tasks such as praying , teaching, helping the poor and looking after the sick instead they went out partying (getting drunk) and going to bed late. The king was angry because of behaviour. That's why he closed down the monasteries.

Who was Henry VIII longest marriage?

Was Henry VIII crazy?

Since they just made a very successful television show based on his behavior, I think this is an important question. If he were "crazy" that would mean that his reality checking capacities were missing, however nothing he did was out of the ordinary for his "reality." People allowed him to do the horrible things he did and we still do not denounce them, hence a television show that celebrates his "sexiness." How can we know if he was crazy when society at the time allowed him to do what he did, and still in some way thinks it was fascinating, interesting and not plain appalling?

Did Henry get what he wanted from anne bolyne?

Based on his actions we might assume Henry VIII was not satisfied in any of his marriages.

He very much wanted sons to be his heirs, since he knew daughters would be challenged on the throne. He had one legitimate son, but one was not enough in a time when children often died, and the mother of his son died in childbirth. And the fact that there were two daughters did not help much.

Henry really loved at least one of his wives, and always called her his beloved sister - this was Anne of Cleves, with whom his marriage was annulled because it was never consummated.

Which wives survived Henry VIII?

Anne of Cleves and the last Catherine, Catherine Parr...

Some like Anne Boleyn died directly because of Henry, and others like Jane Seymour died not directly because of Henry (like she died having a baby).

Did King Henry have a illegitamite child?

Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) had an acknowledged illegitimate son:

Henry Fitzroy (1519 - 1536) Duke of Richmond (by Henry's mistress Elizabeth Blount)

There may have been other illegitimate children, possibly by Mary Boleyn, (and in particular her son, Henry Carey) another of Henry's mistresses and sister of Anne Boleyn; but they have not been confirmed or acknowledged, probably because of the timing of Henry's relationship with Mary Boleyn.

What about Henry VIII that made him smart?

he was a good king because

In 1486 Henry married Elizabeth of York. Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward lV. This reunited the houses of York and Lancaster. After the Wars of the Roses the country wanted order, peace and stability. During his reign Henry had to deal with two pretenders to his throne. Both said they were the sons of Edward lV - the Princes in the Tower. Henry defeated both. Edward lV had two sons, but neither became king after him. When Henry Vll died in 1509 he had a son who was old enough and able enough to become king. In 1485 Henry made a three year truce with King Fames lll of Scotland. Henry later married his daughter Margaret to Fames lV. Henry arranged a marriage between his heir, Arthur, and a Spanish Princess, Catherine of Aragon. They were married in 1501, but Arthur died in 15O2,' it was agreed that Catherine of Aragon would marry Arthur's younger brother, Henry. Henry kept a close eye on finances. He managed crown lands well and raised lots of money from them. He also increased income from taxes and fines, and he avoided spending money on wars. The nobles had become more powerful and wealthy. Many had private armies. Henry used the law to control these families. He imposed very heavy fines on those who broke the law.

What church did King Henry VIII help found?

Anglican Church

Anglican Catholic Answer!

No one created the Anglican Church; it is a manifestation, or showing forth, of the Body of Christ here on earth. What Henry VIII did was to regulate the temporal aspects of the Church, not its spiritual function.

What Henry did do was to see to the temporal affairs of the Church. If we look at his quarrel with the pope, we see clearly that the argument was about money and the pope's political adventures andabuses. Henry was Chief Magistrate of the Church of England and he took his job seriously.

How did Henry the 8th gain his divorce?

Catherine ofAragon was from Spain. She married Arthur, Henry's older brother. Arthur died approximately 5 months after they married. Some say he died of testicular cancer and left Catherine of Aragon a virgin. It was declared so, and Henry married Catherine even though she was 7 years his elder. All accounts indicate that Henry did love Catherine but was unhappy that they did not produce a son, but rather had a daughter they named Mary. Catherine lost 4 of her 5 children. As Catherine aged, Henry became ruthless and was attracted to Anne Boleyn and determined to make Anne Boleyn his new wife. He sent Catherine and daughter Mary into exile claiming that Catherine was not a virgin at their time of marriage. Henry married Anne Boleyn and Catherine died while in exile, some say she had been poisoned.

Was Henry the 8th a gangster?

He was referred to as a gangster because of the way he treated his henchman and he went against people who did not support him as a king. He created many unfair laws and treated people despicably. (In other words: he was very mean to people and treated them like slaves.) But in some ways, he was a very good king because when he defeated Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth field, he had put an end to the War of Roses. He also established the Tudor Dynasty which was a European royal house of Welsh origin. There is no right or wrong answer to whether he was a gangster or not, but the majority of people would say that he was. Hope I helped! :)
