History, Politics & Society

'History, Politics and Society' deals with the affairs of human beings. The categories overlap to a degree: 'History' describes changes in those affairs, and encompasses the other two; 'Politics' is about how people govern themselves; and 'Society' is about how people organize and conduct their lives. What were the obstacles of Benjamin Banneker?

User Avatar
None, really. Although he was an African American in a society that still had large-scale slavery and racial discrimination, he grew up and continued to live in Maryland amongst Quakers who believed in racial equality. In his life he rarely encountered racial discrimination or prjudice, but on the contrary was befriended and admired by many ordinary and prominent white Americans. Friends helped him to study and become an astronomist and surveyor. He got important commissions, was editor of a commercially succesful almanac, and corresponded with several important figures of the time like Thomas Jefferson. After his death stories and legend started to form that sometimes exaggerate his achievements, and sometimes exaggerate the racial prejudice he was supposed to have overcome. The real story however is one of a succesful life without too many out-of-the-ordinary obstacles.

Was the new deal a success or a failure?

User Avatar
Answer A success, it was partially responsible for ending the depression by suppling jobs instead of handouts. Answer The New Deal was a failure because many of the New Deal agencies discriminated against black people. Black people either got no work or received worse treatment or even lower wages. This conveys to us that the New Deal was a failure because Roosevelt did not really achieve his aim of getting Americans back to work. This is the case because the majority of black people were not involved in work due to the fact they were seen as being inferior and not as important as the white race. Therefore this conveys to us that the New Deal was a failure because the New Deal did not improve the situation for black people. On the other hand The New Deal did have its successes. The New Deal created millions of jobs. This suggests to us that The New Deal was a success because by introducing more jobs through The Public Works Administration people had more money to spend. As well as this by creating millions of jobs it put more Americans in to work. This therefore implies to us that The New Deal was a success because it met the aim of Roosevelt which was to put Americans back in to work. "Our greatest primary task is to put people to work" (Roosevelt's inauguration speech, 1933) supports this. This therefore conveys to us that The New Deal was a success because it met the "primary task" so it achieved one of Roosevelt's goals. This is supported by a source showing the number of unemployed people between the years 1929 and 1942. This source supports the fact that The New Deal put Americans in to work because in 1933( the year The New Deal was introduced) there was 24.9% labor force unemployed but this dropped to 21.7% the next year and dropped to 14.3% in 1937. This source shows that the New Deal was a success because it supports the fact that The New Deal put Americans back to work. Moreover, The New Deal projects provided the USA with valuable resources such as schools, roads and power stations. This suggests to us that the New Deal was a success because it conveys to us that without The New Deal buildings such as schools would not have been built meaning that education would not have been the same. Also it implies to us that transport would not have been the same without The New Deal as roads would not have been built. As well as this The New Deal introduced further jobs in construction through the construction of schools, roads and power stations. This also suggests to us that The New Deal was a success because it produced more jobs for the people of America. This makes it a success because the more jobs people had the more money they would earn. The more money means that the people of America would have the ability to purchase goods which could have boosted the economy.
