In many cases, people have thought that imperialism has been non-beneficial towards the country. In my opinion, Japan started to go down when they abolished imperialism. japan worked just fine as it was, though there were poor peasants, it still worked out for them. I mean, what country to this day, doesn't have poor people? there isn't a society to this date that has been able to abolish poverty, so, to me, imperialism had a little more control over the people than any other government to this date.

The puritans (Christians who broke away from the church of England) wanted a purer simpler religion so they colonized in North America. They then learned how to grow crops and took over the land leaving a small amount for the Native Americans. They did this because they wanted more Europeans living in North America. Europeans soon discovered gold which made more Europeans come to the land, this pushed the native Americans off the land.

Advantages of European Colonialism

• Spread of Christianity: European colonialism brought Christianity to many parts of the world. As missionaries from Europe traveled to different parts of the world, they spread the teachings of Christianity and helped to convert many people to the religion.
• Improved Infrastructure: Colonialism brought about improvements in infrastructure, such as roads, railways, bridges and ports. This allowed for increased trade and communication between different parts of the world.
• Economic Development: European colonialism brought about economic development in many parts of the world. Colonies were able to gain access to resources and markets that they did not have before, which allowed them to become more prosperous.

Disadvantages of European Colonialism

There were many groups that were against imperialism as a policy for the United States. Prior to the Civil War, many northerners were opposed to acquiring more territory in the west because they feared the spread of slavery. After the Spanish-American War, some of the old "Radical Republicans" and other members of Congress opposed the idea of acquiring colonies. A large portion of the Democratic Party, led by William Jennings Bryan, opposed annexation of colonies. Anti-imperialists reminded the nation of our anti colonial heritage. They quoted Lincoln in reminding the nation that no man is good enough to govern another man without that man's consent. Many anti-imperialists were racists or appealed to those with racist ideas. They questioned whether is was wise to bring "nonwhite" people "under our flag." Many simply opposed imperialism because it would be too costly and would force the US to send American troops into "harm's way" to put down any resistance to our taking over other lands.

Portugal had many motives for colonizing Brazil. They mainly wanted to expand their empire beyond Europe and Africa. They also wanted to take advantage of the rich natural resources of the area for profit.

Imperialism can be a broad and vague term depending on how its used and can refer to any country that conquers another country and uses any of its resources. This could refer to something such as Alexander's conquests or even the U.S. acquisition of territories (though highly argumentative). Imperialism can cause drains on countries natural resources, inhibit freedom, and have drastic economic results such as poverty. The definition of imperialism is: extending power of various sorts over other nations. Currently, America is fighting in Afghanistan with the cooperation of that country's government. In the 21st century, America and Britain invaded Iraq. This can be defined as imperialism.

1. The open door policy was a positive result because it "opened the doors" to the future. The open door policy created the travel of ideas between many different imperial powers. It also allowed trade with other nations thus growing China's economy.

2. Introduced modern society- weapons, manufactures, trading methods. The westerners caused this result due to their advanced technology during wars.

Colonialism is the exploitation by a stronger nation towards a weaker nation. The use of the weaker nation's resources is to strengthen and enrich the stronger nation. Colonizing nations generally dominate the resources, labor and markets of the colonial territory. Colonialism is essentially a system of direct political, economic and cultural intervention by a powerful country in a weaker one. Neocolonialism on the other hand is a term used by post-colonial critics of developed countries' involvement in the developing world. Critics of neocolonialism state that private, foreign business companies continue to exploit the resources of the states that were once colonized by an outside country.

Some social forces were evolutionary teachings like social darwinism. It justified competition and struggle between European countries. These countries each thought they were the best, the 'fittest' and deserved most of the world.

The Japanese stole Korean men to work in Japanese factories on Honshu and Kyushu and women as "spirit girls" for the Japanese soldiers to rape. Also, artwork and other cultural icons were taken from Korea. Additionally, the Japanese subjected numerous Koreans to numerous forms of abusive torture, compulsory drafts for Japan's wars and workers for Japan's industrialization, and intentionally broke up families.

There are many reasons why Americans would be drawn to Social Darwinism. These Americans could be intrigued by the concepts it presents.

At the turn of the Century, imperialism started to decline. It wasnt as prominant as it was during the early 19th century when France had Napoleon, England and Spain had foreign lands. It started to decline as the colonies once ruled under the European's imperialistic rule, started to declare independance.

Russia colonized by Slavian tribes

In my opinion, there are two factors. A. The constant resistance of Chinese people. B. The complex diversity between the strong powers. As China is so large a country, no western country would be glad if a single country colonize China alone.

One of the negative affects are the way the Middle East was divided so wuickly that ethnic groups were split and were not given there own land. Which is a main issue today with the Kurds, Sunni and Shiite.
