Who was Indira Gandhi?

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (Hindi: इंदिरा प्रियदर्शिनी गांधी) (19 November 1917 - October 31, 1984) She was the Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was India's first and to date only female prime minister.

She is noted for declaring Emergency after a court struck down her election in 1975, and also for her handling of the Operation Blue Star against Sikh militants, which eventually resulted in her assassination.

Born in the politically influential Nehru dynasty, she grew up in an intensely political atmosphere. Her grandfather Motilal Nehru was a prominent Indian nationalist leader. Returning to India from Oxford in 1941, she became involved in the Indian Independence movement.

In the 1950s, she served her father unofficially as a personal assistant during his tenure as India's first Prime Minister. After her father's death in 1964, she was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha by the President of India and became a member of Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet as Minister of Information and Broadcasting[1].

Chosen to become Prime Minister by Congress Party insiders after Shastri's death, Gandhi soon showed an ability to win elections and outmanoeuvre opponents through populism. She introduced more left-wing economic policies and promoted agricultural productivity. A crushing victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan was followed by a period of instability that led her to impose a state of Emergency in 1975; she paid for the authoritarian excesses of the period with three years in opposition.

Returned to office in 1980, she became increasingly involved in an escalating conflict with separatists in Punjab that eventually led to her assassination by her own bodyguards in 1984.

Does the m1 carbine and the m2 carbine fire the same round?

Yes, they fire the same .30 Carbine cartridge, the M1 was to be capable of selective fire control, but this was dropped. Because a demand arose for an automatic capability, the M2was developed, with a selective-fire switch added to the left side of the receiver, operating on the sear mechanism.

Because a demand arose for an automatic capability, the M2 was developed, with a selective-fire switch added to the left side of the receiver, operating on the sear mechanism. With its 30 round magazine and rapid fire, it was an effective counter to the various submachine guns used by the Communists in the Korean War and had greater stopping power.

The US Carbine, Caliber .30in, M3, or T3, was simply an M2 with suitable mountings prepared on the receiver to take various models of infra-red night-sighting devices. No open or conventional sights were provided, and the IR carbine mounted an M3 flash hider, a simpler design than that for the M1C Garand.

All three versions of the .30 carbine (M1, M2, M3) fire the same round, which was uniquely designed for that family of weapons. The .30 carbine round is less powerful (110 grains vs. 174 grains) and has less range (300 vs. 600) and recoil than a the standard .30-06 rifle round used in the larger and heavier Garand rifle. The bullet is also round-nosed rather than pointed. The carbine and its cartridge was intended to fill a perceived gap between a pistol and a full-sized rifle for use by rear-echelon support troops.

Due to Operation Blue Star, the sikh community was really angry on Indira Gandhi as she invaded the Golden Temple (Most religious place for sikh community) with Tanks and Guns. Her sikh bodyguards Beant Singh and Satwant Singh visited Golden Temple after the operation blue star and they could not hold their anger after seeing what happned there. Indira Gandhi was responsible for this because she lead the army to the golden temple(a religious shrine to Sikhs) to kill Bhindranwala (a influential Sikh leader who wanted equal rights for them in India). But because the government choose to attack the temple on a religious day, more than 1,000 innocent people died as it was full of devotees. This attack caused an outrage in the Sikh community. Beant Sikh, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh took the initiative and decided to take revenge from Indira Gandhi. This was quite similar to what Udham Singh did to take the revenge for Jalianwala Bagh or what Bhagat Singh did to take the revenge of the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.

On October 31, 1984 Beant Singh drew a .38 revolver and fired three shots into her abdomen. As she fell to the ground, Satwant Singh pumped all 30 rounds from his Sten automatic weapon into her crumpled body. At least seven bullets penetrated her abdomen, three her chest and one her heart. The Prime Minister was dead. The two Sikhs then calmly dropped their guns. As other security guards seized them, Beant Singh said 'I've done what I had to do. You do what you want to do.' Beant Singh then was killed by gunfire while Satwant Singh was arrested and later sentenced to death.
