weaver was the vender but the model was sold as JC Higgins it was a 4 power scope known as JC Higgins marksman both the scope and the mount were unique to the model 31 rifle 583 75 was Made by High Standard manufacturing in 1952 Both the rifle and scope were sold only by Sears & Roebuck and exclusive to them only I see the scope for sale all the time on Ebay they average about 15 to 25 bucks .If you by one make sure it works and that it has it scope mount

The "Thing" is called a poly-choke. It is a manually adjusted choke. I think they are still in business. And yes I have shot many deer with slugs fired from my Model 20. If you could give a more detailed discription, or perhaps a photo it would be helpful. It may possibly be the Power-Pac choke. That "Thing" is probably a Compensator , and a Varible Choke, or just one of either.

To my knowledge, steel shot is a relatively new development, and it is necessary to use it in shotguns of recent manufacture that were built to handle it. In my opinion, the steel in the barrel of a 1950 vintage shotgun, which was 30 or 40 years before the advent of steel shot, would be too soft. Accelerated wear would probably be the best you could expect. Using steel shot in a gun that old would be like using rocket fuel in a vintage propeller plane. It just wasn't built to handle it. That's my opinion, anyway. Good luck.

Your rifle was made by Marlin (their Model 101) for Sears. First produced in 1951, it has been discontinued. If yours does not have a serial number, it was made prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act.

from what i hear it's only worth maybe 100 dollars but it's definetly a good gun for fun and scopable for squirrel hunting, it's a keeper.

The JC Higgins583. is a High Standard. If it was manufactured after 1968, the serial number should be on the side of the receiver. If it was made before 1968, it may not have a serial number.

All of the JC Higgins Model 20 shotguns were Made by High Standard Manufacturing Just about all the parts should fit from one 12 gauge to anouther 12 gauge. KEEP IN MINDE UNLESS YOU ARE QUALIFIED GUN SMITH YOU SHUOLD NOT BE SWAPING BOLTS BARRELS OR ACTION PARTS OF ANY KINDE... How ever changing the butt stock is somewhat simple task and the butt stock from both 12 and 16 gauge will fit. Make sure that both are JC Higgins 583 20 . I have a 60 with a poly-choke, and the manual says slugs can be shot out of it, as long as you open the choke to "cylinder". By "newer slugs" do you mean sabots? I'd be very careful. I'm pretty sure sabots for shotguns were not in existence when the JC HIggins model 60 was first manufactured (mid 1950's), so it's probably an "unknown". A rifled slug will spin even when fired out of a smootbore (your model 60 has a smoothbore). Sabots require a rifled barrel to create spin.(your model 60 does NOT have a rifled barrel). If it were me, I would NOT chance shooting sabots out of a model 60. I checked my manual for my Model 60. Page 11, at the bottom, reads "The Model 60 handles lightest trap, skeet loads...heavy field loads...2 3/4 magnums...even rifled slugs." Page 5, at the bottom, reads "With the CHOKE CONTROL in 'Cylinder' position that Model 60 becomes the most accurate shotgun on the market for shooting rifled slugs." A word of caution: I don't know if today's rifled slugs are the same as the 1950's rifled slugs. So, if you choose to shoot slugs out of your 60, do so at your own risk. I use my model 60 for shooting lead shotgun shells at pheasants. A great, light-kicking gun. Be safe. take1a

I would suggest trying a local gunsmith who has been around a while. Gun shows would also be a possible source. Numrich Gun parts, http://www.e-gunparts.com/, found a clip for a Savage Model 1903 .22 short pump action rifle for me many years after it had been discontinued. They are known for their large stock of gun parts. Magazines for this rifle are also available at www.midwayusa.com. In googling the model 42, I learned it was a rebranded Marlin 80 and I bought the Marlin 80 magazine; it is product # 635389 and it looks, fits and operates the same as the original JC Higgins clip. The above is correct. The Model 42 and the Marlin Model 80 use the same clip. Do a google search for "Marlin 704046" and you will see a bunch of online stores selling them for about Fifteen bucks. midwayusa.com didn't have them when I searched.
