Model number for lucas distributor as fitted on jaguar xk 150 3.4 liter 3 carbs version?

Hi,The three carburetor version of the XK150 was known as the "S" or special equipment model. According to the Jaguar factory parts manual for the XK150 and XK150 S, there were three distributors offered for the XK 150. The 7-1 3.4 litre engine was equipped with a Lucas 40578/D. The 8-1 compression 3.4 litre engine had Lucas 40576/B and the 9-1 3.4 litre engine came with Lucas 40617 A/D. The XK 150 S also was offered with three different distributors. The 3.4 litre 9-1 engine had a Lucas 40616 A/B distributor, the 3.4 litre 8-1 engine had a Lucas 40670/A and the 3.8 litre 9-1 engine utilized the Lucas 40617 A/D. All of the above distributors were model DMBZ.6A. I have a very clean 40617/A distributor asvailable if you are interested.

luckily I am in no rush as my trunk was empty when it got locked. But there has to be a better way.

Are Jaguars more reliable than in the past?

Not really, and have you noticed how much they started looking like the Ford Taurus since Ford took over? I'm surprised Jag didn't come out with an Eddie Bauer edition...

And now Tata owns them. . .sigh

Does the 1998 XJ8 LWB Jaguar have a light on the dash clock Mine does not light up at night?

This is a very easy fix. Firstly all Jagar XJ8's that have an analogue clock DO have a bulb. To fix this, carefully remove the wood trim around the clock, don't worry, you wont snap it, as it's fixed to a metal plate behind. Next unscrew the 4 screws located in each corner of the vent fascia. you will need to carefully unhook the fascia from the drivers side first to allow room to reach the clock, this is a fiddle, but take your time. You'll notice that the clock is secured in place by 4 plastic clips, simply press down on each clip to remove the clock body (white). Here you will see that you have open the clock by further clips, once you have done this, you will see the bulb. Simply turn to remove. Reverse this process to finish the job. Hope this helps

Jaguar 1988 Xj40 XJ6 circuit 2 failure?

After reading the question for: "circuit 1 failure" I decided to post my experience with the related "circuit 2 Failure" read on:

On the dash there was a "circuit 2 failure message on my 1988 XJ40 or XJ6. After some poking around I noticed that the fuse for the Auxiliary Electric Fan on the radiator up front was blown. I replaced it, but after another drive was blown again. Some more poking around turned out that the Fan was in a rather sorry state of rust and barely turning thus creating a short and melting the fuse as soon as the relay will try to turn the circuit on. The fuse is not really labeled properly (and I don't really remember right now what position it was) However it is controlling the AC relay and all that grouping, Fan relay also. Checked the wires and fuse socket for signs of melting from somebody that might have put a higher amp fuse but found no problems. So I got a nice new looking Fan from the junkyard and the problem dissapeared and never I have seen it again...

The car had many electrical problems to the point that the Electronic display was starting to look like a Christmas tree dispaly, flashing through various varnings and driving me nuts. With patience and using the info I have found on the web I have eliminated them all, except for a bulb failure warning that is really for real and legitimate (I am missing the light on the rear left bumper corner) Strangely enough the warning goes away sometimes for hours at a time...

I don't own the original manual that came with the car, howver I think I have just about all documentation that is available for the XJ40 cars plus all the info on the web but nowhere there is any reference to any of the misterious "circuit n failure" warnings... All the other were somewhat clearer: (ABS) and so forth but these were a puzzle.Hope this helps somebody Cheers!!!

Reply from Olen1009...I just bought an '89 XJ6 with a circuit 2 failure and, assuming the manuals are similar, the original manual wouldn't help you. There is nothing in it about fuses except the locations of the 3 fuse panels. Period!

Your jaguar xj6 vcm code marks 47 what can it be?

On a 1990 thru 1994 XJ6 it means the Idle Speed Control Valve (coil 2) has an open or short circuit

What is circuit 1 failure on Jag 1989 XJ6 thanks?

I have a 1988 Jag XJ6 that presented a "Circuit 1 Failure" on the dashboard. The cause of the problem was found to be a blown fuse in the passenger side fuse box. I replaced the fuse and the error message went away. "Circuit 1" refers to the fuse box located behind the right-front passenger side kick panel. "Circuit 2 failure" would indicate a problem in the fuse box located behind the driver's kick panel. Lastly, a "Circuit 3 failure" message would indicate a problem in the fuse box located in the center console. I hope that helps! - Keith

Why would the AC on a 1996 Jaguar XJ6 suddenly start blowing hot air if the freon compressor is OK?

As the Freon level in your air conditioning system gets lower the cold air will become warmer and warmer. You will need to recharge the system with Freon.

Have I ruined my 1997 Jaguar XK8 Driving 15mph or so I thought and tried to close the convertible top. Now the roof button will not work and the top is one inch from closing. Allen tool won't work.?

To close the top:

Open both door windows.

Open the trunk and pull the passenger side trunk liner towards the center of the trunk. You may have to work the liner away from the lip holding it in place. Once this is done, you will see the convertible top hydraulic pump. On the side of the pump is a petcock. Turn it completely counter-clockwise. This opens the valve on the pump.

Now use the Allen tool to raise the hook. Pull the convertible top down to meet the hook. Close the top by using the Allen tool.

Return to the trunk and close the petcock. Replace the trunk liner.

Press the convertible switch to close the top - this will raise the rear windows.

Close the door windows.

Have the vehicle checked at a dealership.

What is circuIt 2 failure?

Circuit 2 is the fuse box located at the bottom of the left-hand side front door pillar. Just turn the set screw 1/2 turn to remove the cover. You probably have a blown or missing fuse.

Where can you download a repair book on a 1989 xj6 jaguar?

YOU CAN'T - THEY ARE NOT ON LINE. JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE HAS TO DO: Buy a Haynes Repair manual for the car. That $14.00 Book will save you hundreds to thousands. I'm not giving you a fish; I'm teaching you how to fish. As a fellow Jag (V12) owner, this is the best way I can answer your question to help you now, and in the long term. YOU CAN ALSO GET A FACTORY MANUAL ON A CD-ROM. GO TO WWW.COVENTRYWEST.COM AND ASK FOR A SALESMAN. A CHEAP INVESTMENT. I use both, but the Haynes is easier to see and understand. Tell Dick Maury that Marty Roth sent you. He knows everything Jag.

I second his opinion: buy the Haynes Manual! I currently have a 1990 Sovereign and a 1989 Vanden Plas that I use as a parts car, and that Haynes Manual has already saved me well over a thousand dollars in repair costs! A do-it-yourselfer's must!

How do people in France get around in cars?

French people get around in cars the same as anyone else. I do know that on the five lane peripheral road around Paris in the rush hour you need to keep looking ahead. Don't worry what French drivers do behind you or to the side, you'll only get terrified, they like to weave around a bit.

Why would the engine on a 1993 Jaguar XJ6 turn over but not start?

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER I RAN OUT OF FUEL AND I WAS INSTRUCTED TO LEAVE MY IGNITION ON FOR AROUND FIVE MINUTES TO PRIME THE FUEL AND TO MY GREAT PLEASURE IT DID THE TRICK, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM YOU HAVE BUT GIVE IT A SHOT ,HOPE THIS HAS BEEN HELPFUL FOR YOU.GOOD LUCK.

My XJ8 refused to start after switching it off after only running it for a few seconds; I was told the cylinders were flooded with fuel (when the engine is cold more fuel is pumped into the cylinders).

The remedy was to start the engine with the gas pedal flat on the floor (don't 'pump' it); this will stop any further fuel being sent to the cylinders and will also clear them of any excess fuel. When the engine starts just take your foot off the pedal and let it warm up. Hope this helps.

How much did a 1948 Jaguar XK 120 cost?

The XK120 wasn't mass produced until 1949 and came out as a 1950 model. The first 200 came off the line with aluminum bodies and had an emblem attached to the passenger dash stating the vehicle was an exact replica of the car that set a sustained speed record of 134 mph at LeMans in 1948.

Correction: The 1948 Jaguar XK 120 was actually a modified prototype 1948 XK 100 (100 inch wheelbase, four cylinder) Sports Car in which the XK 120, overhead cam, six cylinder engine intended for the 120 inch wheelbase Mark V Sedan was fitted for the 124.6 MPH two way record run in Belgium, in 1949. There is no record of it being sold.

The great public interest in the car required Jaguar to cancel using the XK 120 six in the sedan, which went into production with the Mark IV pushrod six in April 1949. The few XK 100s already built were promptly modified into 102 inch wheelbase XK 120 Super Sports cars; largely for racing purposes from 1949 on.

There were 240 of these largely handmade light alloy (aluminum) bodied XK 120 models made between July 1949 and January 1950. Mass produced XK 120 models with largely steel bodies were made from February 1950 to September 1954.

What year model of Jaguar between 1990 and 2004 is the most reliable and problem free?

Jaguar and "problem free" don't seem to be realistic words to use in the same sentence. They are stylish vehicles, but not very practical. 1990-1994.5 XJ's (both XJ6 & XJ12) are known as XJ-40's, and where blessed with numerous little headaches, Lucas electrical componets and the poorly designed door handle components are the most notorious. Then Ford Motor Company purchased Jaguar from British Leyland and the quality improved dramatically. So my OPINION is to look at 1994 1/2 models or newer for a daily driver. They are known as the XJ-300's and have had NO recalls and an EXCELLENT safety record. The are comfortable but not very fuel efficient. BUT as with most luxury imports, service and parts are expensive. There are MANY websites and Cyberstores to purchase parts and tools for the DIY'ers.

How can you replace spark plugs on a 2001 Jaguar XK8?

Had the same problem with 1990 Sovereign 4 L. If you still have the Jag tool kit you will find a long Hexagonal sparkplug remover , with an accessory insert bar.

The jag remover has a plastic insert which grips the top of the plugs, gently but strongly enough to lift the plugs out, after undoing them (anti-clock ). If you haven't this tool, you could find out the recommended plug sizes from Auto Spares Shop, and measure the diameter of the plugs hexagonal . On the XJ6 this was 17mm.

Considerable force was required to initially loosen each plug. If you have no plastic insert in the sparkplug hex spanner, perhaps just go fishing , after undoing , with each cylinder's sparkplug lead.

Rex.

1. remove the six 7mm screws covering the coils on the center of each cam cover. 2. next using a small screw driver press with you finger on each coil connector and at the same time use the screw driver on the lip of the connector to slide it off carefully. doo this for all 4 coils. 3. lift the wiring harness out of the channel, note where the harness enters at the rear of the cover. 4. remove the 7mm bolts holding the coils. remove the coils in order so you but them back in the same spot. unlike the 1990. the spark plugs are 5/8 size spark plug socket. 5. in auto. "Lefty loosey/tighty righty. turn the plugs counter clockwise. 6. using a extion magnet remove the plugs. DO NOT let anything fall into the holes. check the inside walls of the spark plug tubes for oil, the most common cause of misfire is oil fowling in the tubes, water ingess to the coil cover. 7. replace plugs with factory or tripple platnium plugs only.

8. when reinstall after you connect the coil wiring harness run a bead of silicone around the wiring harness where it enters the cover this prevents water from running down the harness and into the coil cover.

How do I enter the code in a 1994 jaguar xj12 when it has gone to safe mode?

Referring to the sound system: Use the radio preset keys to enter the 4-digit security code from the sound system ID card. This card is in your owner's document folder. If you are missing the code, your local dealer can get it by entering your VIN.
