Jihad

Jihad (جهاد) is a tenet of Islam and a religious duty to strive in the way of God. There are two general ways to do this, the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad. The Greater Jihad is an introspective journey to conquer your internal demons and follow the Divine Laws more closely than previously; this kind of jihad should be entirely peaceful. The Lesser Jihad refers to conflicts and confrontations between Muslims and Non-Muslims or other Muslims, which often erupt in war, but can also be performed through non-violent protests, debate, and advocacy.

Do Muslims kill to get to heaven?

Even though Islam emphasizes on being good and doing good as the path to heaven, some misled Muslims believe that killing non-Muslims will get them to heaven.

NO Muslims do not kill to get to heaven if anything that is considered the way to HELL. Only under extreme circumstance like jihad when an enemy will force Muslims into war is killing a person permissible.

What is the name of a rocket which Hamas uses against Israel presently?

As Hamas does not have what most would consider a conventional army, they are forced to come up with relatively low-tech, easily concealable weapons and tactics, while the Israeli military has the opposite challenge: a huge technological advantage, but a well-hidden enemy which can disappear at a moment's notice. This dynamic means an intense arms race is ongoing, and it's safe to assume both sides will continue to develop creative weapons and tactics.

Hamas uses a variety of small artillery rockets in attacks on Israeli settlements and military forces. Russian rockets called Katayusha are often used, as they are cheap and readily available. Hamas fighters have become best known for building their own homemade rockets, called Qassam. These rockets are often built in garages and machine shops with salvaged explosives and scrap metal, but have become remarkably accurate in recent years. Qassam rockets also have the advantage of being able to be fired quickly, with the operators able to flee within seconds of launch.

The Israeli military has become remarkably sophisticated in countering Hamas rockets, however. With American help and funding, Israel has deployed Iron Dome, a surface-to-air missile system capable of automatically shooting down Qassam and Katayusha rockets. Radar-guided artillery and airstrikes are able to locate and attack launch sites very quickly.

How can the Muslims adopt jihad in the modern world of today?

Jihad has two types::1-passive: it is a basic right for any creature to defend itself from threats they call it a defensive war.2-active:: it is somehow a Liberating war most of clerics shia and sunni thinks that this kind of war is just allowed under a God messenger like saint Muhammad or Mahdi in the end of world when Jesus also returns to fight against evils. muslim believe that Jesus will follow Mahdi and will want Christians to join him.

Jihad

What does jihad mean and who were the warring fractions?

There are two questions here:

1) What is a Jihad?

Jihad is a tenet of Islam and a religious duty to strive in the way of God.

2) Who were the Warring Factions?

If this is referring to the original jihads, these were the wars by Meccans, lead by the Polytheistic Qoreish Tribe against the Medinan Confederacy of Muslims and other tribes (both Polytheists and Jews). As time has gone on there have been innumerable jihads against numerous enemies. In the Middle Ages and up to the modern day (like in the Iran-Iraq War) Muslims will even declare jihad against other Muslims if it suits them politically.

Why do Americans support the Irish Republican Army but don't support the IRA's pals Hamas or Hezbollah?

First, it is worth distinguishing the US government from the acts of independent American citizens. The US government has not supported the IRA in any serious capacity, but Irish Americans have. Additionally, the United States has listed the RIRA (the militant successor to the Provisional IRA in 1997) as a terrorist organization and has blacklisted them. Irish Americans supported the IRA for sectarian reasons, namely to free Ireland from British rule.

In the case of Hamas and Hezbollah, there are far fewer Americans of Arab descent to support these organizations, but there is such support. This has ended up in a number of court cases concerning the money-trails that lead to these organizations, most notably the Holy Land Foundation Trials. The reason that the United States government goes after supporters of Hamas and Hezbollah is that both organizations are directly hostile to the United States.

As a final note, Hamas and Hezbollah are not "pals" of the IRA. Not all paramilitary/terrorist groups have warm (or even extant relationships).

Did God sanctify jihad?

According to Islam, Jihad is sanctified by God, provided that it is performed in accordance with the requirements stated in the Shari'a. Just about every other group of people rejects the concept of Jihad as something sanctified by God, either because they do not believe that God has ordered Muslims to become stronger in their faith or conquer other countries or because they do not believe that the Muslim God exists.

How long has jihad been around?

In Islamic concept, Jihad means "to strive against". It is divided into three parts; Jihad against one's own soul and temptations, Jihad against ignorance in the form of verbal communication and Jihad against non-believers in the form of physical violence.

If we read the above-mentioned paragraph closely, one can assume that Jihad has been in this world ever since man has been; conquering his lust, fighting wars, arguing against one another in the advocacy of his religion.

It is however, a common misconception, to believe that Jihad comprises only of "wars".

Why do all Muslims wage holy jihad?

All the Muslims have never waged the so called Holy War - Jehaad. This is untrue.

The issue of the Jehaad has been unnecessarily blown up to blame the Muslim world. To support their claim, they have read some verses of the Qur'an and proclaimed that Jehaad has been mentioned in the Qur'an

It has been mentioned in the Qur'an - there is no doubt about it but every single verse of the Qur'an has 7, 70, 700 meanings, as Imaam Ja'far as-Saadiq (as) has said. Depending on the mere translation of the Qur'an is incorrect and too shallow to explain the essence of the Qur'an

Recently, in India, the leading Muslim scholars have regarded all such anti-human activities under the banner of Islaam and Jehaad as unlawful and anti-islaamic.

What are Hamas Fatah and Hezbollah?

All three of these groups are Jihadist terrorist organizations with a number of discernible characteristics. The most common and identifiable Muslim terrorist action is the suicide bomber who blows himself up to take out some enemies as well as himself. Muslim terrorist organizations tell their membership that the fight in which they are engaged is part of the holy Islamic struggle of Jihad and anyone who opposes them is not properly guided. Therefore, Muslim terrorist organizations will identify what sect of Islam they belong to and whether or not they oppose the other sects. Most Muslim terrorists wish to inspire fear in their enemies and therefore primarily attack civilians, considering them part of the enemy. Some "moderate" non-associated clerics have defended these activities claiming that the civilians represent part of the group that "is opposed to Islam". Since Muslim terrorists exist in countries with a weak internal support structure, in many cases such as with Hezbollah, Hamas, or Fatah, they will use their own funds to build schools, parks, hospitals, and other social services in the communities they occupy. It provides goodwill with the local inhabitants and allows them to more effectively spread whatever messages they may wish to say. Finally, Muslim terrorist organizations like Hezbollah, Hamas, and Fatah have all actively engaged in elections (Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas and Fatah in Palestine) with their own political parties. If the governments formed after these elections were not desirable to these parties, they engaged in military actions to force the national government to capitulate to their desires. In the case of Hezbollah this created a violent stand-off in Beirut and in the case of Hamas and Fatah, this prompted a Palestinian Civil War in Gaza and the West Bank.

Why is it that while most Muslims are not terrorists most terrorists are Muslim?

The answer is simple enough, Islam's holiest book the Quran teaches muslims that it is their duty to subdue the world and implement Sharia. Some muslim's who I call fundamentalist's take it and run with it, they support jihad and other forms of subduing the world. Other muslims just don't, they say they interpret the Quran differently. However, if you read the Quran (as I have) it is not that subjective and clearly it is the most hateful book ever written.

What are the different meanings of jihad?

The Arabic word Jihad literally means struggle. This term, especially in Islam, is applied to the struggle or work done in the way of Almighty Allah (God). Unfortunately, this word is confused with the word Qitaal that means Armed fight against enemies of Almighty Allah. The greatest Jihad is against one's own self, one's wicked passions, lust, selfishness etc. An armed fight is the last resort which not only the Muslims but also the other nations/religious followers adopt when their existence is in danger. Islam is a peace loving religion. It does not aim at killing any innocent human being.

Does the Qur'an say that God commands a Jihad on nonbelievers?

There are certainly contexts given in the Qur'an for fighting holy wars (jihads) against Non-Muslims, usually those relate to (1) Non-Muslim groups who oppress Muslims, (2) Non-Muslim groups already in conflict with Muslims, or (3) Non-Muslim groups who do not permit Islam to spread in their lands. However, the Qur'an does not argue that all or most Non-Muslims should be violently targeted.

What is Jihadism?

Jihad or Jihadism means 'struggle, striving, doing effort'. In Islam, Jihad means striving in the Way of Almighty Allah (God). In fact it is the Sacred Struggle made to maintain peace in human society which everybody should do irrespective of his religion.

Very unfortunately, most of the non-Muslims, and many of the Muslims misunderstand Jihad. They confuse it with 'Killing'. It is not true. Jihad in Islam is of many kinds. The highest is 'striving' to control one's own animal, ruthless, brutal and evil passions. It is very difficult to remain cool and composed in the face of aggression. Islam demands 'patience' from its followers. Speaking truth, refraining from corruption of all kinds, being just to all humans and even all creatures, being honest in all matters of life, and being steadfast and upright in the face of temptation are among the actions which are the demand of Jihad of the Highest kind.

Preaching Islam by the word of mouth and practicing it in one's daily life is also Jihad. Spending money in the way of Almighty Allah, doing acts of charity, helping the needy and the poor is also Jihad.

When the enemies of Islam attack the Muslims, the Muslims must take up arms if negotiation fails and there is no alternative but to fight. Almighty Allah says in the holy Qur'an:

Sura (chapter) Al-Baqra-2: Aya: 190; "Fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight you, --But do not transgress limits. For Allah does not love transgressors. Aya-193: And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah, but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who are oppressors."

Thus it must be clear in the minds of the true Muslims that killing human beings in the name of religion is not permitted in Islam. Killing of one innocent human being irrespective of his religion, caste, color or country is like killing of all human beings in the Eyes of Almighty Allah (God). Almighty Allah has created all human beings and loves them all.

What is the difference between Islamism and Jihadism?

There is nothing in Islam religion called Islamism or jihadism. There is Islam and jihad. The difference between them is that Islam is a religion per Qur'an revelation by God to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Gabriel (or Jibril). However, jihad is the struggle ; practiced by Muslims and one Muslims; to get life requirements, raise up families, practice good morals and religion teachings as well as struggle to defend lands, homes, families, and religion against military attacks. When Islam interferes with politics it is called political Islam. When jihad is directed ti fulfill political goals it is called political jihad. Refer to related questions below.
