What is McCarthyism?

McCarthyism was a campaign against so called communists in the US government and other institutions carried out under Senator Joseph McCarthy in the period 1950-54.
Many of the accused were blacklisted or lost their jobs, although most did not in fact belong to the Communist Party. It was similar to what we now call witch hunts.
McCarthy was carried away as well because of all the attention he got through TV and radio. His claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the United States federal government and elsewhere.
He was unable to substantiate his claims and that led him to be censured by the United States Senate.
He also used various charges of communism, communist sympathies, disloyalty, or homosexuality to attack a number of politicians and other individuals.
He died at the age of 48 of hepatitis perhaps caused by excessive drinking.

Who was Joseph McCarthy and what public accusations did he make?

Answer He led the Red ScareJoseph Raymond McCarthy (November 14, 1908 May 2, 1957) was an American politician originally aligned with the United States Democratic Party and later with the United States Republican Party. McCarthy served as a U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1957. During his ten years in the Senate, McCarthy and his staff became notorious for aggressive investigations of people in the U.S. government and others suspected, on grounds of their political beliefs as Communists or Communist sympathizers, of being Soviet agents.

As a result of these controversial actions the term McCarthyism was coined to specifically describe the intense anti-Communist movement that existed in America from 1950 to about 1956, a time which became popularly known as the Red Scare. During this period, people who were suspected of varying degrees of Communist loyalties became the subject of aggressive inquiries, which became known as "witch hunts" to his opponents. People from the media, the motion picture industry, government, and the military were accused by McCarthy of being suspected Soviet spies or Communist sympathizers. Although McCarthy's activities did not directly result in any convictions or criminal prosecutions for espionage, the now declassified Venona Cables from the former Soviet Union indicate that some of the individuals he pursued were actually guilty. The term "McCarthyism" has since become synonymous with any government activity which seeks to suppress unfavorable political or social views, often by limiting or suspending civil rights under the pretext of maintaining national security.
Joseph McCarthy (November 14, 1908 - May 2, 1957) was a Republican Senator from the US state of Wisconsin who was known for his fears of widespread Communist subversion .
Basically he was a famous war hero during WW2 (World War 2)

What were the Army-McCarthy hearings?

Early in 1954, the U.S. Army accused Senator Joseph R. McCarthy (Republican, Wisconsin), and his chief counsel, Roy Cohn, of pressuring the Army to give preferential treatment to former McCarthy aide and friend of Cohn's, G. David Schine. McCarthy claimed that the accusation was made in bad faith, in retaliation for his questioning of Brigadier General Ralph W. Zwicker the previous year. A special committee, under the chairmanship of Senator Karl Mundt, was appointed to adjudicate these conflicting charges, and the hearings opened on April 22, 1954. The hearings were televised, and many believe that they contributed significantly to McCarthy's subsequent decline in popularity. A month before the hearings began, TIME featured a cover story March 22, 1954 , with Cohn & Schine pictured and subtitled, "The Army got its orders." Ten years after the hearings, in 1964, the documentary film Point of Order! was released, which consists of 93 minutes of footage selected from the 187 hours of kinescope that covered the hearings.

What was the US Congress's final response to Joseph McCarthys actions and how long after their response did he die?

Congress's response was to censure him after his long tirade of baseless Communist accusations in the Army, Government, and what not. His accusations began in 1950 and after three long years of hunting Communists without facts the Army, with the Presidents blessing, put McCarthy on trial for trying to get a former aide of his better treatment in the Army. This trial/ hearing were televised for the 36 days it went on and 20 million people watched. The people who watched realized McCarthy was just a bully and his popularity began to plummet. With his popularity gone Congress finally felt confident enough to try and censure him in 1954. The censure hearing held to see if he should be censured on 46 different accounts. After about two months the hearing ended and he was censured on only 2 accounts. This took away most of his power. No one listened to his speeches and television stayed away from him. After three years as a powerless senator he died of inflammation of the liver on May 2, 1957. He was 48.
