Do you have to go to college to become a makeup artist?

Most makeup artists work on brides. In a lot of states - mine is one of them - you need either a cosmetology license or an esthetics license to legally earn money as a makeup artist. And to get either one, you must go to beauty school.

How old is the makeup artist Lisa Eldridge?

I'm interested to know this too..says she's been working for 20 years as a make up artist so she must be at least 38 if not older...she looks amazing with such great skin. wonder what she does to her skin or if it's natural.

She is 43 years old and looks amazing! I read that she is really fussy about her skin care regime and always wears sunscreen. Id say its natural, as you can always tell when people have had loads of work done to their face, they start to look wierd. I love the way she dresses too

What are the day rates for makeup artists or stylists in New York?

That's a good question. Day rates for makeup artists do vary depending on the venue, but a good approximation would be any where from 8-12 thousand dollars an hour. When you pro rate this amount for a 30min. job, it comes out to somewhere around 9 billion dollars a year. So it would probably be a good idea to drop out of school and move to New York to be a glorified barber. In response to the above answer which is not totally incorrect but slightly, the day rates for MUAs do vary depending on the project however it also depends on your experience and skill. A good MUA with years of experience will make more per day than one who is just starting out in the business. In fact, most MUAs work for free for a couple of years while building their portfolios and some continue to do this throughout their career. Calling an MUA a glorified barber is also inaccurate because MUAs have nothing to do with hair styling even though some have gone to cosmetology school and have learned the craft of hairstyling/cutting. Makeup artistry is not what people think. There is science behind it. An MUA must also have analytical skills and intuition. Most MUAs study color theory and some even biology. There is a chemistry to it. Have a "barber" pick up some latex and an airbrush gun to turn a beautiful women into an old hag. There is continuous training involved as new products and techniques come out. And all of this, the training and product that the MUA uses for the project is paid for BY the MUA. And all of this is not cheap and must be replenished or apparently we would go out of business.

How do you become a makeup artist?

Makeup application is a skill. You may have the skills but not necessarily the technique. A great and cheap way to learn is through a course, unfortunately, courses and beauty school can cost you thousands of dollars. Here is advice I received and it has been incredibly valuable:

1- Get yourself a great, professional level DVD course. It's fun, easy, and MUCH more affordable. I highly recommend the TEMA DVD's because they use several models of different ethnicities which is KEY!

2-Get yourself a kit: Fill it with foundations of every color and different types of blush, shadows, lip colors... I suggest saving by opting for eye and lip palettes that have a ton of different colors and drugstore brushes, but spend a little more on high quality foundation.

3-Build a portfolio. Tell models/photographers you are willing to do "TFCD" (Time for CD) which means you will not be paid for your work but WILL get a CD of the photos to use for your port. It's the easiest way to get high quality pictures starting out. A great place to meet industry folk is or (like facebook for industry)

Once you have these tools I suggest work as many free jobs as you can until you feel very confident and have a ton of pics for a site to show people. Best of luck!

How long do you have to go to school to be a makeup artist?

For becoming a makeup artist I would not go to a cosmetology school, but a makeup school. Many cosmetology students are dissapointed with the little makeup they actually learn.

European School of Makeup in LA has great 3 month programs.

What do make up artist wear to work?

Black simple clothes (T-shirt, pants, skirt & tights, etc)

Closed in black flats, some sets and workplaces require closed toed shoes for health and safety reasons. Avoid dangly bracelets, earrings, necklaces etc.

The idea is to look chic & stylish yet be comfortable because you'll be on your feet all day long. Try to avoid trends that are too out there as your outfit will detract from your work.

Same goes with your makeup, hair and personal grooming. Simple elegant makeup and well groomed hair that is styled well for medium to short length or tied/pinned back if long will enhance your image as a professional makeup artist.

How much does Sarah Palin's makeup artist get paid?

Sarah Palin's makeup artist has earned over $11,000 dollars per week in recent weeks. Amy Strozzi, Palin's makeup artist, was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records. The campaign categorized Ms. Strozzi's payment as "PERSONNEL SVC/EQUIPMENT." The payment on Oct. 10 made Ms. Strozzi the single highest-paid individual in the campaign for that two-week period. (There were more than two dozen companies that got larger payments than Ms. Strozzi). She easily beat out Mr. Scheunemann, who received $12,500 in the first half of October, and Ms. Wallace, who got $12,000. In September, Ms. Strozzi was also paid $13,200 for "communications consulting." But several individuals were paid more by the McCain campaign that month, including Mike DuHaime, the political director, who received $25,000 for "GOTV CONSULTING," and Mark Salter, one of Mr. McCain's senior advisers, who got $13,224 in salary. All told, Governor Palin's makeup artist has cost the publicly-funded (i.e., taxpayer-subsidized) McCain campain over $35,000 in the last two months alone. Well, at least the Republican campaign's expenses for Sarah's makeup were disclosed because they accepted taxpayer funding and spending limits. Even though he voted for campaign finance reform and touted "transparency" and "change", the Obama campaign did not accept public funds, raised all its money the old-fashioned way from special interest groups and individuals, and has not disclosed the source or disposition of campaign funds. In addition, that money was there for the campaign's use. They could have bought TV time, held a town-hall meeting at a Caribbean resort, sponsored an entry in the Indianapolis 500, or whatever they thought would help their ticket win the election. They decided a make-over for the Vice Presidential candidate was the best way to use it.
