Manifest Destiny and Western Expansion

Manifest Destiny is a term to describe Americans desire to explore and expand across the entire continent during the 19th century. Westward Expansion began in the United States following the end of the War of 1812. Between 1816 and 1821, six new states were added to the union, and pioneer families swept westward to fill these new lands. While westward expansion impoved the lives of many Americans, it displaced thousands of Native Americans.

How would you explain Manifest Destiny in 19th century United States history?

Manifest destiny was the misplaced belief that people had the right given by God to spread out and to take land not theirs. When the European colonists arrived in North America they saw a land that was open with no fences. To them this meant that no one owned the land and they discounted the Native populations as having in any claim on the land. As the nation grew this attitude grew along with the acquisition of land. If the Native American tribes got in the way the policy was to kill them, move them, or keep them on reservations. Thus, manifest destiny rolled on and this attitude still exists. If we landed on a new planet I can imagine that we would try to displace the native population and claim the land as ours.
