User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Massage can be done for a person of any age, but many therapists and clinics require parental consent on minors and will often require a parent or guardian to be present in the room while the massage is being administered. The therapist working on the young client should be the same sex as the client. Massage has been shown beneficial in infants all the way up to geriatric patients! When scheduling your massage, ask the therapist or front desk associates if they work with the age group you are trying to schedule.

Does pressing on muscle knots make them go away?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on how you press on it. A muscle 'knot' is usually referred to as a trigger point. If it is a trigger point, rather than a tender point, when you press on it, it will 'trigger' pain in an associated area. If it is a true trigger point, it will have a condition known as ischemia, which means it is lacking normal blood flow, and that is what is causing the pain. The best way to check is to gently rub across the muscle tissue to find the taut band, a then follow the taut band until you locate the trigger point. The amount of pressure that you should apply, or better yet, a professional massage therapist trained in neuromuscular therapy, is about a 7 or 8 on a scale of 10, where 0 is no pain, 5 is medium pain, and 10 is unbearable pain, the kind that makes you resist, or tighten up. This is called guarding. If you get to the 'sweet spot' there will be some pain, but it will feel like good pain. Another important component is breathing, while the pressure is being applied, you should be able to do relaxed abdominal breathing. If you let out a sigh of relief, then that is the signal that the pressure was just right and it is time to gently release the pressure off the trigger point.

When should the Petrissage massage be used?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Petrissage a stroke that is like kneading, as in kneading bread. It does several things, among them is increasing local circulation and increasing elastation of local tissues. This helps to warm the tissues and helps them relax.

Some massage therapists may tell you that it loosens the tissue to go deeper and make change, but that is not accurate, nor the correct way of saying it. While it is true that when the tissues are more relaxed that it is easier to do deeper massage techniques, massage therapists are not capable of "making change" in the body. Massage may encourage or fascilitate change, but unless you make an incision in the skin and stick your hands in there, nobody can make direct change in the body. It may sound like a gorey illustration, but it is an accurate one.
