- Start by lowering the glass to the very bottom.
- Raise the front edge of the glass so that is sits 225mm (8.86 inches) above the fully lowered door sill position.
- Disconnect the negative battery.
- Remove the door panel - pop fasteners on the edge of the door, screws around door pull, etc. I forget, but there may also be a screw underneath the tiny pocket of carpet in the door pull.
- Look closely at the bottom of the glass. You will notice some peglike additions on the glass. As the window travels up, follow it's path and you will see where they hit window stoppers to prevent shooting up past the door guides.
- Remove these glass stoppers.
Replacing the windshield, the glass stoppers should be bolted down to 79-112 in-lbs.
It is also advisable to relube the glass sliders as they often become dried and slow.

Yes, remove the upper carpet near the rear window, remove the three piece metal bar holding the top in, separate the window from the rain rail by drilling the pop rivets out and take the rear section to the boat canvas shop. Miata's with glass windows are heat sealed in, and the entire top has to be replaced. Unfortunately I discovered this after someone vandalized mycar by busting the rear window out.

The fuel tank is right underneath where the glass for your soft top sits when down. However, on the sides of the fuel tank, there are two large tunnels that go back directly to the trunk.
Water typically gets into the cabin and rolls to the trunk via these tunnels.
There are typically 3 leaking points in the Miata:
- A general tear in the soft top.
- Clogged rain rails - water running off the top is channelled inside the car (by design) to an area just behind the door. The water is channeled to a small drainage hole just a little larger than the size of a pencil. It is located behind the seat belt tower, but before the hinges on the soft top. Because it is so small, it can very often get clogged, allowing the water to overflow into the cabin.
- Since water is channeled towards the door, a rain railmust collect any rain and channel it to the door. The rain rail is plastic and can become brittle and crack over time. It is underneath the rear of the soft top and behind the rear carpet on the parcel shelf.
