Your brake pedal may not be touching the sending unit to turn off the brake light. Try having somebody look while you pull up the brake pedal with your foot. You can adjust the unit to be closer to the brake pedal. There is no room to work, so have fun.

There is a small plastic disc/spacer between the brake pedal arm and the brake switch that often fractures and falls off. It is about the size of a nickel, and has a small post attached to it--costs about $3.00 at a Mercury dealership. Hi I have a 97 Mercury Tracer and when my brake light comes on I check my tire pressure if one or more is low I put air in and my Brake light goes out every time.

This is a pain. Remove the old one and put the new one in. Use _only_ a genuine Nissan thermostat or the dingleberry may be incorrect causing incorrect warm-up time. You may need some glue to hold it in place during installation.

What a horrible answer....

Here is how you do it.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal. Drain the cooling system so that the level of coolant is below the level of the thermostat.

2.

Remove the thermostat housing and set it aside. Lift out the thermostat.

3.

Set the new thermostat in position. Make sure the jiggle valve is in the upright position. Replace the thermostat housing.

4.

Refill the cooling system with the appropriate type and amount of coolant. Replace the radiator cap securely.

5.

Reconnect the negative battery cable to the terminal. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes to warm up. Check for proper operation.

· Make sure the engine and the radiator are cool to touch before proceeding with the installation of a new thermostat. Never lay tools or engine parts on the battery or on top of the engine.

· Drain the coolant into a container that can be sealed. Ingestion is usually fatal. Properly dispose of coolant that's contaminated or several years old.

I have a 98 Villager and I had the same problem. I found that the brake light switch at the brake pedal needed adjusting. Just loosen the lock nut and adjust the switch so that the brake lights do not stay on but only come on when the brakes are applied, then tighten the locknut. Worked for me. Hope this helps.

Remove the bench by prying up the bottom front edge on the outboard ends. Two vlips hold it in place. Then pull forward. Remove the back by first removing the two inboard seatbelt bolts. Pry the seatbelt holder away from the bolts. Pull forward on the bottom of the seatback and then lift up. There are three brackets holding the back to the interior chassis.

The fuel filter is on the fire wall on the divers side of the engine compartment. It it under the reservoir for the master cylinder. It is held in place my a metal clip. NOTE: may have fallen out of the holder, and be laying against the fire wall. My 97 has standard hose clamps, so no special tools are needed.

Unless you are having a specific drivability problem, ie. low fuel mileage, engine knock, no power, or the like, a tune on any modern car is a pretty straight forward parts replacement. Spark plugs, cap, rotor, and plug wires. The computer takes care of the timing and the fuel/air mix.

If your C/V boots are torn, it is far preferable to replace the entire C/V shaft assembly, as it is both easier and cheaper. C/V boot repair kits don't work well, and actually replacing a C/V boot requires removing the shaft anyway. If the boot has split it is likely that dirt and moisture has entered the joint and caused wear already.

Because of the complexity of this kind of job, it is strongly suggested that you buy a repair manual that explains it in detail. You need to loosen the axle nut with the car on the ground, raise the car, remove the wheel, unbolt the lower ball joint, tie rod end stud, strut lower through bolts, remove the brake caliper, then you can tap the CV shaft stud back and pull the spindle assembly free of the CV shaft. The driver side CV shaft can then be popped out of the transmission. The passenger side CV shaft has a carrier bearing with three bolts holding the shaft to the bearing. Do not try to take the bracket off the engine, it is not necessary. Installation is the reverse of removal.

The transmission fluid dipstick is just to the left of and below the battery and fuse box.

The only place available is the coolant reservoir.

The Villager engine does not have a coolant bleed valve.

The rear window wiper arm will have a retaining clip at the bottom of the wiper arm. Hold the retaining clip in with two fingers and pull outward on the rear wiper arm.

You need to ask a complete question.

On a 1995, there is no accessable OBD plug. There is a connector in the engine compartment that will give you the codes....... sort of !! The connector must be unplug and the proper pins jumped momentarily. Then the check engine light will start flashing to give you a number code sequence. However, without a repair manual (which has pictures), there is no way to tell you the exact location of the connector. It is near the starter motor along with two other connectors.

Check all of the fuses with a test light. It is the same fuse as your interior lights. Its the 4th one down on the right side or your fuse panel. Its a 15.

If you stand in front of your van and follow the hose on the left side of radiator- you will see another hose shaped like a C. At the bottom of that second hose is a silver therostat housing with four bolts in it. You have to empty the antifreeze and take off the two hoses to get to the housing. Rachets work best with a two inch long 12 metric fitting. Hope this is helpful.

There is no way to 'test' a timing belt. On your 1993, Mercury suggests it be replaced every 64K miles.

The Gates belt I bought from Auto Zone came with an instruction sheet which explained everything in detail with pictures. Other than that, buy a repair manual.

Under the drivers side, on top of the transmission cranckcase. You'll see a cable with a clip-on connection to the VSS. It can be very hard to remove as it may seize up over time and there's not alot of room to work in.

Shocks = $50 plus labor.

Timing is set by the PCM and is not adjustable.

The fuel pump shut-off switch is located in the driver's foot well, behind the kick panel. The reset button is accessible through an opening in the kick panel just below the hood release.
