Methodists believe in a Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). They believe Jesus Christ is their Savior. Those are the basic beliefs.
The United Methodist Church came into being in 1968, when the Methodist Church merged with the United Brethren Church. Methodist ministers first preached in any sort of building. Circuit riders, Asbury and Coke being two of them, traveled by horseback to preach the gospel and establish churches until there was scarcely any crossroad community in the United States without a Methodist presence. The Methodist Episcopal Church, the M.E. Church, the predecessor to the Methodist Church that merged above, officially began at the Baltimore Christmas Conference in 1784. Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke were the first bishops elected.

In my view, the principal difference is cultural - Lutheranism arose in northern Germany and Scandinavia, while Methodism arose in England and the newly-independent American colonies. However, I suspect that Methodist and Lutheran theologians and clergy would have a different response to your question.

Actually, ironically Wesley never was a member of the Methodist denomination. He was an Anglican priest his whole life and he never left Anglicanism. He founded Methodism as a Bible study to go alongside Anglicanism but never as a new denomination. After he died his followers left Anglicanism and started the Methodist denomination.Answer
John Wesley founded the Methodist movement in 1739. He was originally an Anglican like his father. A quick search of the internet can provide a number of very good biographical summaries of his life.
The first one is correct. Methodism was not founded by John Wesley. It was founded by Christians in America based on the the teachings of John Wesley. This was done actually right before his death. The first he heard of the American church called Methodism was on his deathbed and he was saddened. Wesley remained an Anglican throughout his life. The term "methodist" was first used by other Oxford students to describe the bible study group that John and Charles formed. They were called "methodists" as an insult, because they were very methodical in their studies and practices. It was not a term coined by Wesley to describe a church he created. In the most basic form his theology was that we are saved by the Grace of God, and as such should do all the good we can in His name while on earth. His sermons are amazing to read.
I am guessing that the order of worship may be more controlled in the Lutheran church, but that may not be true.
Addition: Methodists are allowed to change up the order of worship a little bit, especially contemporary services, but Methodists general cling to the traditional "method" of worshiping. Many people brought up Methodist are very appreciative and aware of having a printed or posted order of worship for reference, especially when things are changed around.
There are many many differences, between the two bodies. I was raised in the Methodist and Presbyterian church , which are much more similar de to the roots of the denominatons.
Lutheranism was patterned from Reformer Martin Luther a Roman Catholic priest. Although his 95 thesis was posted on the fdoor the Lutheran Church has remained the closest of the Protestant bodies to Catholic in doctrine and liturgy. Although Anglican is also similar to Catholic, there are many points of differences in doctrin which Anglican has more in common with the Reformed faith.
Methodism which came from the word Methodical traces its roots to John Wesley an Anglican priest. The Methodist church became more of an evangelical holliness and revivalist denomiation. Some churches will vary in style. While still having some similarities to Anglican, they still retain close resemblance to the Presbyterian church as well. Methodist are much less liturgical than Lutherans and have differences in doctrine regarding the sacraments of communion and baptism.
Lutherans believe in consubstantiation ( similar to Catholics) with regards to Communion while Methodist hold a spiritual significance, much different.
Methodist services can resemble a low episcopal or Presbyterian or Congregational church, but not a Lutheran liturgy at all, which again is much more similar to Roman Catholic.
I would like to take issue with the above answer. The United Methodist Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church are now in full communion with each since 2008. Both are liberal, mainline Protestant denominations that celebrate the Holy Eucharist and Baptism as sacraments. The Roman Catholic Church believes in transubstantian not consubstantian. The UMC believe in the living presence of christ while celebrating Holy Communion-like the Episcopal Church.
Both share a belief in the Apostolic Succession and both have deacons, elders and Bishops. The Lutherans are more apt to be more formal in their worship and be more "Episcopalian" than an average UMC service. But both celebrate the Christian year and festivals and both have prayer books. The UMC prayer book is very similar to the Book of Common Prayer found in the Anglican Communion. John Wesly was a "high church" Anglican Priest and stayed that way till his death. Because of this, the UMC is predominately Anglican in doctrine and theology and in its liturgy. The Lutherans have much in common with the Episcopal Church and both have been in full communion since 2002.
The Episcopal Church follows the via media or "middle way" between Protestantism and Roman Catholic doctrine and practices: that is both Catholic and Reformed. The Episcopal Church traces its history from the Church of England and stresses its continuity with the early universal Western church.

Though the Triennial Convention and the Home Mission Society were theoretically neutral in regards to slavery, some Baptists in the South did not believe this assurance of neutrality. They knew several leaders who were engaged in abolitionist activity. To test this neutrality, Georgia Baptists recommended James E. Reeve, a slaveholder, to the Home Mission Society as a missionary in the South. The Society's board decided that they would not appoint a slaveholder as a missionary, a decision that the Baptists in the south saw as an infringement on their equal rights. Another issue that disturbed the churches in the south was the perception that the American Baptist Home Mission Society (org. 1832) did not appoint a proportionate number of missionaries to the southern region of the US. Baptists both north and south preferred different types of denominational organization: the Baptists in the north preferred a loosely structured society composed of individuals who paid annual dues, with each society usually focused on a single ministry. Baptists in southern churches preferred an organization composed of churches patterned after their associations, with a variety of ministries brought under the direction of one denominational organization. Baptists from the South subsequently broke from the national organizations and formed a new convention, the Southern Baptist Convention which was formed May 8–12, 1845, in Augusta, Georgia. Its first president was William Bullein Johnson (1782-1862), who was president of the Triennial Convention in 1841.
There is not really a difference. I go to a Methodist church. We all are Christians: Baptist, Methodist, Christian, just all different names mostly. We all are Christian and believe in God with some small differences.
Scripturally, the Love Feast is alluded to in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. It probably began as a simple, but full meal, shared with people of lesser means. The Moravians reintroduced it in ritual form in the 18thcentury. John Wesley, impressed with the deep spirituality of the Moravians, introduced it to Methodism. The meal was followed by testimonies, letters read from missionaries, and exhortations. In the early days here in the United States, with the shortage of ordained clergy, there were few opportunities for faith adherents to receive the Lord's Supper; the Love Feast became an important feature of congregational life. It was common practice for Methodists to perform this ritual once per month, usually the week preceding the celebration of the Holy Communion. In some congregational situations, participation in the Love Feast was mandatory if the member intended to receive the Lord's Supper. A Steward would distribute tokens to each Love Feast participant as an indication (at least in a symbolic way) that the bearer of the token was "in love and charity (harmony) with his/her neighbor, intending to live a new life, following the commandments of Almighty God." The long and short of this practice was no token, no communion. The simple, but deeper, meaning of the Love Feast still holds relevance today: Believers who are living, serving and worshiping together are to be in love and harmony with one another; sharing cool water and a morsel of bread as an indication of our selfless, neighborly love as unto Christ.
