What does Michelle Obama eat?

Michelle Obama believes in eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Eating healthy foods is one of her passions; she has started a community garden at the White House.

How did Michelle Obama achieve her goal?

Restaurants need to offer healthier choices on children's menus. The food and beverage industry should market nutritious foods, not junk foods, to kids. And families should eat dinner together as often as possible.

Schools need to make sure elementary students get recess, and the federal government needs to improve the nutritional quality of food commodities provided to schools.

These are among a federal task force's wide-ranging recommendations to reverse childhood obesity. It was released Tuesday by first lady Michelle Obama.

"For the first time, the nation will have goals, benchmarks and measureable outcomes that will help us tackle the childhood obesity epidemic one child, one family and one community at a time," she said.

Solve the problem in a generation

The goal of the plan is to try to solve childhood obesity in a generation, the report says. That means returning to a childhood obesity rate of 5% by 2030. Right now, about 32% of children and adolescents today - 25 million young people - are obese or overweight, government statistics show.

Those extra pounds put children at a greater risk of developing a host of debilitating and costly diseases, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. And children today may lead shorter lives by two to five years than their parents because of obesity, a 2005 study found.

Government agencies are already working to get healthier foods in schools, expand physical activity in schools and provide mothers with better prenatal care, the first lady said.

To prepare the report, which was requested by President Obama, the task force reviewed research, consulted with experts, considered 2,500 comments from the public and consulted 12 federal agencies, including the Departments of Agriculture, Defense, Education and Health and Human Services.

Among the recommendations:

•Restaurants should consider their portion sizes and improve children's menus.

•The food and beverage industry should develop aggressive targets for increasing the proportion of advertisements for healthy foods and beverages. Within three years, the majority of food and beverage ads directed to children should promote healthy foods.

•Media and entertainment companies should limit licensing of their popular characters to healthy food and beverage products.

•Local governments should create incentives to attract supermarkets and grocery stores to underserved neighborhoods.

•The federal government should provide economic incentives to increase production of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

•Government, businesses and foundations should work to increase the number of safe parks and playgrounds, particularly in underserved and low-income communities.

•The federal government, working with local communities, should distribute information about the upcoming 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans through simple messages, such as: Drink water instead of soda or juice with added sugar; eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins; choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products; and, when possible, eat dinner together as a family.

Earning praise from experts

The recommendations are drawing applause from childhood obesity specialists. "It's very comprehensive with lots of detailed recommendations that could make a real dent in childhood obesity," says Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington-D.C.-based consumer group

Generally the First Lady is well favoured, even when her husband isn't doing so well in the polls. Even given that, Mrs Obama is doing pretty well on the popualrity scale. Who among first ladies has taken most vacations?

This is a difficult question to answer, since (with a very few exceptions) most First Ladies only take vacations with their husband the president; thus, it is usually not their choice when they go on vacation. By that criterion, Laura Bush would have taken the largest number of vacation days in the modern era, since she accompanied her husband George W. Bush to their ranch in Crawford Texas very frequently. But if you are responding to an internet myth that Michelle Obama has taken more vacations than any other first lady, it is not true. In fact, just about every modern first lady has been accused of taking too many vacations or spending too much money. There is no evidence that Mrs. Obama has taken any more vacations than other first ladies.

How many girlfriends had Barack Obama before Michelle Obama?

Why did Michelle Obama give up her law license?

Obama gave up law in 2002 after winning re-election to the Illinois state senate. Michelle gave up law in 2008 to make room for her husbands presidential campaign and his Current administration. She now focuses her time on the roles as first lady and dedicate more time to caring for her daughters.

The above answer conflicts with online records in the State of Illinois, where Michelle Obama voluntarily gave up her law license in 1993. The records say Michelle is on a court-ordered inactive status. Many in the legal business would say one gives up their license to avoid being disbarred.

Did Michelle McKinney Hammond get married?

Michelle McKinney Hammond is quoted saying, "I am actually kind of ambivalent because I have a lot of really great male friends. I am kind of spoiled with not having that whole male void thing. God has provided so much that it would take a really special man for me to want to spend the rest of my life with him at this point. I have met people that I have liked, but nobody that I thought I just couldn't live without. My life has been so rich and so full. I think I really do treasure my peace. I went through so much as a single in the wrong types of relationships, the drama they brought and the angst that they brought, that when I finally found that I could actually be happy and not have a man in my life -- Now, don't get me wrong. Men are great. When you get the right man in your life, it is awesome. I have a host of friends and good marriages to look at, so I am not one of those who is jaded and thinks it cannot happen. I know it can happen with the right partner and the right amount of work, but the bottom line is it has to be God's choice for me because I am not willing to venture out and experiment at this point."

How many trips has Michelle Obama taken since becoming first lady?

We frequently get asked this question, and not just about Michelle Obama. A common discourse in society accuses First Ladies of being extravagant, greedy, materialistic, and living like Marie Antoinette while everyone else suffers. Such accusations, while fun for talk shows, are rarely accurate, and are generally based on partisan exaggeration. That said, the fact is that we do not have all of the costs for Mrs. Obama's vacations, since some of the expenses (secret service protection, for example) are private. Also, in several cases, she had friends accompanying her, but some sources say that these friends reimbursed the treasury for their expenses; we do not have a way to verify that, however.

What we do know is that based on reporting in major newspapers, Mrs. Obama has not spent more than other recent First Ladies, nor is there evidence she is extravagant. In fact, some sources report she likes to shop at stores like Target and the Gap. It should also be noted that many of her designer gowns (which she wears at formal dinners) are donated by the fashion designer, in exchange for the great publicity that comes from a First Lady wearing that designer's creation. Also, according to fact-checking sites like Snopes.com and Factcheck.org, Mrs. Obama does not have "the largest personal staff in history" nor does she spend more on staff salaries than her predecessor Laura Bush did. The role of the First Lady has continued to expand, and most of Mrs. Obama's expenses are related to her work as First Lady.
