New Orleans was and is the largest and most accessible seaport on the Gulf coast, and is also the terminus of the Missouri-Ohio-Mississippi River system. It was the best place for American farmers west of the Alleghenies to take their surplus produce for export to other American seaports and the rest of the world.

The 1862 capture of New Orleans was significant because it was the largest Confederate city in the deep South. In fact it was the sixth largest city in the entire US, with a population of 170,000. It was also a major city of commerce. It had become rich as a result of the slave trade and had the nation's largest slave market. Each year 1.4 million bales of cotton passed through the port. This was over half of the US exports of cotton.

There wasn't a Civil War Battle of New Orleans. New Orleans depended on two forts on opposite sides of the Mississippi dozens of miles downstream to prevent a hostile force from ascending the River. These were Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip. The US Navy mounted a water-borne siege of the Forts which went on for about a week, while the Forts were bombarded from "bomb ketches".
