1989 cutlass ciera How do you change the steering columns?

The upper part of the column (the large part of it) is removable relatively simply. That isn't to say easily or comfortably; it's a bit of work in a tight area. First remove the rubberized trim around the column by reaching behind the lower panel and releasing the clips. Then remove the panel by detaching screws holding the panel in place. Then, roll or push down the rubber boot at the base of the column (where it goes through the floorboard and firewall). There is a small bolt that tightens a collar, locking the upper column to the intermediate shaft. Remove this bolt and save it. While you are under the column, carefully remove the shift cable where it attaches to a lever coming off the column, and disconnect all harnesses connecting to the steering column. You may need to pull the wires down to get the connectors out of the protective sleeve of the column. Also, be sure to disconnect the headlight connector from the upper left part of the column; it's not obviously visible at first glance. Ensure that all attachments to the steering column are removed and then remove the four large bolts (or three bolts and one nut) attaching the upper column support to the dashboard, making sure that you (or an assistant) are holding the column up so it doesn't whack you. The column should now be able to be removed. It may take some applications of lubricant such as WD-40 to the intermediate shaft collar and some tugging to get it free. When removed, be careful not to apply compressing force to the length of the column. The design in that vehicle is a safety column designed to collapse easily in a collision and as such, it can collapse if you are careless with it.

At what temperature does a car battery freeze?

A car battery freezes at different temperatures depending on its state of charge. When fully charged the electrolyte is mostly Sulfuric acid and it will not freeze easily, something as low as minus 60. When discharged the acid turns to mostly water and the freezing will start at much warmer temperatures, minus 10 can give a problem with a flat battery. As they get older the charge rate decreases but you should not have a freezing problem with a battery that is charged. More of a problem in cold weather is the batteries inefficiency, at minus 30 70% of the capacity is lost due to the cold. Keep the battery warm if you live in a really cold area.

Can you drive your 88 cutlass with out your thermostat?

Technically....yes. But this car is computer controlled and relies heavily on the engine reaching proper temperature. Without the thermostat it will not reach running temp, which is vital for fuel consumption, timing, and other system parameters.

Where is the egr valve located on a 1996 Oldsmobile ciera?

If you are looking down at the engine from the front of the car, it is located on the right, in the back. It is not buried down. It looks like a middle sized cylindrical object. There is a ribbed line that comes out of it and leads towards the firewall.

What is the cylinder number configuration on a 6 cylinder 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera?

Usually it's listed on a tag just above the radiator along with emissions hose routing. If not, the library should have a Chiltons or OEM service manuals.

1992 cutlass ciera radio antenna whirrs and bobs up and down after the engine is turned off The battery will run down unless I unplug the battery How do I fix this?

Try turning the radio off before turning the car off. If this doesn't work, check the assembly at the base of the antenna for a sensor switch for gunk and clean it off. Don't ask me where it is, because I don't have the schematics for the antenna assembly on a 1992 Cutlass Ciera handy at this moment.

If this doesn't work, the easiest "fix" is to wait until the antenna goes all the way up, then clip the power lead to the antenna motor. Just make sure you don't clip the antenna lead. This will keep the antenna up all the time.

Next cheapest route is to replace the whole antenna assembly, motor and all. I would recommend getting a cheap $5 standard antenna from a local auto parts store and do away with the "convenience" of the automatic retractable antenna.

How do you change a water pump on a 93 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera?

drain radiator of coolant, remove serpentine belt and remove pulley on water pump. If the pulley has 4 little bolts on it then loosen and pull the pulley off. If there are no bolts on the outside of the pulley then its pressed on, you can remove it yourself with a blowtorch but its hard to get off and on correctly. Remove the bolts holding the pump on and pry the pump off the engine, this will be hard most likely due to the gasket holding the pulley to the eingine. There will be coolant that will come out due to coolant you couldn't drain by the radiator...just have a container under car to catch coolant. Once removed scrape all the old gasket material off the engine... there is a gasket remover tool but a razor blade workls just fine. Once removed clean area well and apply gasket to new pump with gasket sealer and place pump back onto engine. Tighten bolts and replace pulley and belt, fill with coolant and top off as needed. be sure to purge the coolant systemof air after any major coolant work. The repair is relatively easy as loong as you have the right sockets for the job...good luck!
